Nestled quietly in the Ryuchin Gorge of Uda City, Nara Prefecture, Ryuchin Shrine is a sacred power spot where it has been said since ancient times that a dragon god resides. The gorge, with its beautiful natural scenery, has also been selected as one of Nara Prefecture's "Yamato Waters."

The gorge, created by the activity of the Muro volcanic group, is located within the Muro Akame Aoyama Quasi-National Park, in the Fukaya River basin. The enshrined deity, Takaokami-no-kami, the god who controls rain, is said to have been invited from Muro Ryuketsu Shrine. Stepping inside, a solemn atmosphere permeates the air, and the crystal-clear emerald-green pool of Ryuchin Falls unfolds before your eyes.

Since ancient times, during severe droughts, rituals to pray for rain have been performed by drawing sacred water from the waterfall pool. Within the shrine grounds, the worship hall and the main shrine are located on opposite sides of the river. According to ancient legends, "If you look directly into the eyes of the great serpent (dragon) that lives in the sacred waterfall basin, you will immediately fall ill or be punished."

A grand legend is also passed down about the young Kobo Daishi, who trained in the mountains of Uda and summoned the dragon god, bringing forth beneficial rain.
