“Trump’s Solution Is Worse Than the Illness” — Rahm Emanuel and the Path Forward for the Democrats

Katie Couric

From national service to Democratic party strategy, Rahm has thoughts. He joins Katie to talk about fixing democracy, reuniting the country, and… if he’s maybe running for something, someday?
Rahm Emanuel has never been short on opinions—or jobs. He’s been a senior advisor to President Clinton, Chief of Staff to President Obama, a three-term Congressman, and Mayor of Chicago. Most recently, he served as the U.S. Ambassador to Japan. Now, he’s back stateside and full of ideas. From how to get the Democratic party back on track to how to effectively fight back against the Trump administration, Rahm joins Katie for a candid conversation—and may be the very first politician ever to honestly answer the question: are you running for president?

Hey guys! I've known Rahm (Ambassador Emanuel, I should say!) for a long time, so it was great to sit down with him for this interview--it was one of the most honest and thoughtful conversations I've had in a long time. Let me know what you think in the comments!

And now we have no Dept of Education, no Headstart, no Medicaid, etc...

He speaks honestly. As a politician I feel that I can believe him!!!

I just saw the actual number of people trump has fired. 280 thousand people. That’s almost as many people as there are in Pittsburgh (302 thousand). People should be talking about this.

Rahm is absolutely correct in the disastrous way our government handled the COVID crisis.

Americans have been too complacent. The weakness of our country.

Thankyou Katie for this very informative interview with the very knowledgeable Mr. Emanuel! I wish the current administration had his view on international relations! MAGA has become FUBAR . . .

Loved this interview. I'm a Chicago Dem so you know where my heart lies. As much as I feel JB Pritzger has done a commendable job as our governor I don't think he would be my first choice for a candidate in 28. I would hope Adam Kinzinger will throw his hat in the ring in 28, I would put my vote behind him. This nightmare we are living through right now will end soon. Trump is a very unhealthy 78-year-old and I don't see him finishing the present term, at least I hope not!! This country needs unity again, not division!!

We need more volunteers, a national service program and people need to be more charitable in many different ways to help each other. We need to respect all human beings and living creatures.

I pray the Democratic Party can present these issues as strong as is being spoken here….

Love these extended discussions, Katie!

I agree that a public service requirement for young people would go a long way toward bridging the divide that exists in our country, and help prepare young people for life and citizenship in a way that no amount of classroom instruction can do. My suggestion is that it needs to be at least a year. That's the cycle upon which most school/intern committmemts are made. (I.e. a young person pondering "What am I doing for the next year?") And it also takes that long to onboard and train any 'volunteers' or new employees to do any meaningful activities.

Most excellent explanations by Rahm Emanuel! Thank you.

This is a great interview. I’m from small town rust belt USA . I can confirm mass amounts of people here adore, worship, DT. It is alarming and shocking to me. This has been informative. It’s been hard to hold on to hope. It’s hard to trust anyone. Why are we dumbing down education? We need School house Rocks and public education support. Let’s make that happen. We need the urgency to support education and the arts.
