hello everyone. happy pride. this is a video about doomed yuri (the video i've been teasing a little bit for the past couple of months). scripted, filmed, and edited by me - all mistakes are my own. i don't really know what i'm doing and i have no idea if this is going to be something that you guys like since it's pretty different from what i usually do here, but i wanted to give it a try anyways :)

introduction: 0:00
part 1 (madoka magica - welcome to class s): 4:07
part 2 (yuri on ice & the yuri/yaoi disparity): 46:51
part 3 (the apothecary diaries - why can't girls just be friends???): 55:53
part 4 (buffy - are we burying our own gays?): 01:32:29
CORRECTION: Class S literature is banned temporarily in 1941, not 1936. apologies!
spoiler descriptions as promised:
MAJOR:
MADOKA MAGICA: plot-exhaustive recap and analysis of the whole original anime run. mention of Rebellion and the general tone of how that ends as well. (whole video, you can’t avoid this one)
THE APOTHECARY DIARIES: plot-exhaustive recap and analysis of season 2 informed by all of the twists in season 1. (parts 3 and 4).
BUFFY: Willow’s whole arc in season 6 (and its aftermath in season 7). Nothing specific about other main characters or general plot of the season outside of Willow, but Willow is a big part of the show and her arc is a particularly big deal in the sixth season. (part 4)
MINOR:
SAILOR MOON: ending is referenced in a general way that reveals how things go for the main character (part 1).
MY HERO ACADEMIA: details of a well-known side character death in the final season (parts 2, 3, and 4). no discussion of plot.
ATTACK ON TITAN: the real name of a minor character who begins the series with an alias/the dooming of her canon relationship with another minor character (part 2). no discussion of plot, why it’s doomed, or any of the (many!!) twists. an impressive lack of spoilers about those things, actually. you’re in more danger scrolling your FYP.
THE 100: reference to a widely-publicized major character death, few details given (part 4). no discussion of plot.
SUPERNATURAL: the last 3 widely-publicized episodes as they relate to Castiel and Dean’s ultimate fate (part 4).
ADVENTURE TIME: ending spoilers for whether two characters do or do not end up together (part 4). no discussion of plot.
THE LEGEND OF KORRA: visual ending spoilers for whether two characters do or do not end up together (part 4). no discussion of plot.
okay, that's everything! hopefully you enjoy it!

MISINFORMATION CORRECTION: Class S literature is banned temporarily in 1941, not 1936. Apologies and thanks to @AC-dk4fp for the nod!
I’ve also gotten a bunch of comments critiquing my lack of inclusion of Revolutionary Girl Utena, another dark, doomer magical girl show, this time with a canon sapphic couple. I did learn about this in my research and plan on watching it soon since it sounds like…RIGHT up my alley for obvious reasons. Some of you guys are just recommending it (thanks for that) but others are fairly wondering why I didn't talk about it here.
I ended up not using it for this video because I made the decision to narrow my thesis to focus mostly on media with modern day mass Western audiences. I can’t speak to how RGU was received in the 90s, and it HAS had a lot of artistic influence on other, later animation. But in the modern day it’s a cult classic that lacks the continued dominance in Western fandom I see in the other shows I discuss in this video. You can see this a little bit in the amount of people who logged ratings for it on MAL in comparison to Madoka Magica—72,000 vs. 821,000.
That’s just my opinion of course, and it's not me saying at all that it wasn't a critically important and subversive series in yuri history. It's more that this video is not quite on yuri history, overall, so much as it is on modern day conceptions of doomed yuri in Western fandom. More than likely I’ll still be mad at myself for not making room for it when I do watch it considering how many of you love it and have tied it to this video haha but that was my rationale. I had to draw the line somewhere or I would have worked on this for another 3 months and it would be 2 hours longer </3 Which is probably appealing to some of you but I think would have actually killed me. Like I would be dead.
With that said—if the comments I’ve gotten are anything to go by, I’d strongly recommend checking it out if you’re looking for more yuri during this trying time and you're willing to engage with a darker, grittier piece of media 🙏 And a sincere thank you to everyone reminding me to check it out. Now that I am free from the chains that have bound me to my desk making this video….perhaps it is time.
