The TOTO logo is almost ubiquitous in Japanese homes.
In fiscal year 2025, this company incurred a 6.9 billion yen loss in China and shut down its factories in Beijing and East China.
However, in the same year, it achieved record-breaking sales of 737.4 billion yen and operating profit of 53.7 billion yen.
The profits weren't from toilets.
Its ceramics business, which accounts for less than 10% of sales, generated more than half of the company's overall operating profit.
In semiconductor manufacturing equipment, a component called an "electrostatic chuck" is used to hold wafers in place.
TOTO is the world's second-largest player in this field.
In fiscal year 2009, this business generated 5.5 billion yen in sales and an operating loss of 1.7 billion yen.
Sixteen years later, it has become a business generating 28.9 billion yen in revenue.
That's a profit margin of 43%.
