The Fate of Canon Crushed by Smartphones: Are there cameras gathering dust in your closets?
Global camera sales are projected to plummet from 121.46 million units in 2010 to 9.44 million units in 2025.
That's a reduction to approximately one-thirteenth of the original number in 15 years.
More than 90% of the market has disappeared.
Canon was at the heart of this decline.
They closed two factories in China, in Zhuhai and Zhongshan.
Their printer market share in China fell from 7.7% to 3.9%.
These figures clearly indicate withdrawal.
However, the same company's financial statements state:
"Record-high sales for the second consecutive year."
Sales for the fiscal year ending December 2025 reached 4,624.7 billion yen, a record high for the second consecutive year.
Furthermore, in the first half of 2026, the fastest-growing business within the company was its cameras.
It wasn't the cameras themselves that disappeared.
Why are records being broken in an industry whose market has shrunk to one-thirteenth of its original size?
Please read to the end of this story, which began in 1933 in a single apartment room in Roppongi.
