DR1's survivors feel like people who, despite their many differences, were able to survive the Killing Game together.

DR2's survivors just feel like the last 5 people left.

This isn't an issue with just the survivors. When you ask people which cast is better, of course they'll say DR2, because they are judging based off of each individual character in a vacuum, but if you ask which cast has a better group dynamic, DR1 pulls ahead despite that.

Outside of the trials, think about how isolated a lot of the characters are past the first few chapters: Chiaki interacts mostly with Hajime and Nagito; Nekomaru only regularly interacts with Akane, Kazuichi, and Hajime despite having a social talent; Sonia tends to just interact with Kazuichi, Gundham, and Hajime. Fuyuhiko gets one scene with Nekomaru and one scene with Mikan and then what? He only interacts with Peko during the trial. If you miss the optional item-based scenes, Ibuki's gets two scenes where she heavily interacts with others, and they are both crowd/group scenes.

If you put Celeste and Aoi in a room, you know exactly how they would interact. If you put Mikan and Akane in a room, ?????

The most social characters in DR2 end up being Hajime, Nagito, Hiyoko, and Teruteru. You can put them into a room and always know the result. However, with DR1 those characters are Makoto, Aoi, Yasuhiro, Celeste, Hifumi, Byakuya, Toko, and Kiyotaka. That's half the cast instead of a quarter, and five of them are survivors unlike the single survivor in DR2.

Keep in mind that they made an entire prolog anime heavily featuring the DR2 cast, and that wasn't able to fix this issue either. They had to bring in two new social characters, Yukizome and 3-aki, to actually hold the group together, and it STILL ends up feeling unnatural.

Of course, both of them are beat by DRV3s cast with all of its cliques and allegiances, but due to how that cast is written, you can't compare them in the same way. Plus, they should lose points for the Monocubs. Enough points so that they aren't number one anymore.

Again, most DR2 characters in a vacuum can beat all the characters from the other games, but they're just used incorrectly. Hopefully, Yoichiro Koizumi is better at writing this group than Kodaka was. Honestly, the DR2 survivors could have easily been a really cohesive team if DR2 was either given more development time or at the very least a writer that prioritizes that part of the story early on.

I suddenly don’t feel as bad about them choosing Danganronpa 2 for a remake because it means another chance for this cast to find some actual dynamics and chemistry.

As paradoxical as it may sound, I find the DR 2 characters more human precisely because they’re more absurd and feel more disconnected from the group as a whole. Their personalities and interactions remind me a lot of my own memories of my classmates (and I graduated from school quite a while ago). What I remember most are these key, “loud” traits that made each person stand out from everyone else: the class clown, the school couple, the class representative, and so on.

Maybe this is a feature of the Eastern European education system (or simply the school/college I went to), but the way the characters interact with each other in DR 2 also feels much more like a real group to me. You have a few classmates you spend your free time with, study with, and actually talk to, but with most of the others, you might literally never have a conversation throughout all your years of studying together. Seriously. And it’s not like I was a loner, bullied, or neurodivergent and therefore unable to connect with my peers. That’s genuinely how everyone around me lived.

Of course, I wouldn’t have minded if the remaining characters had more chemistry with each other, but I actually like that they feel like a bunch of random survivors who mourn the people they lost and then go their separate ways toward their own futures. It almost reminds me of graduating from school - we move forward alongside each other, rather than as one united group. That resonates with me personally much more and reminds me of my own path.

in SDR2, unfortunately a lot of the character interactions are locked behind FTEs unlike THH where there were still meaningful and personal interactions through CGs and the daily meetings throughout the game

Yasuhiro not only is good comedic relief, but he also serves an important gameplay purpose of giving an in-universe explanation as to why the cast needs to go over even the most basic information in the trials.

I also like the subtle nuances of his character. How despite being a coward, he’s the one who takes control of the group when Taka is out of the picture, that he’s the one who dismantles Monokuma.

Plus his hamburger monologue is the funniest joke I’ve heard in any video game. Puts me to stitches every time

Kodaka actually mentioned during dr2s last anniversary that originally chapter 5 was going to be quite different than what we got and was changed a decemt way into production, including having a differnt original "planner" (which could easily imply atleast 1 differnt death)
Which could give some slight explanation as to why dr2s survivors have such a weak dynamic, since nagito or chiaki may have damn well been apart of the group originally until partway into production, although this is ultimately speculation
I think its intereting that dr2 has always had rumors about "victom swaps" or "last minute death order changes" when I cant remember seeing anything like that from the other games beyond funfacts about Distrust
To me atleast, I feel all of dr2s survivors make sense on an individual level, but I agree with the comment saying stuff like "dr2s cast feels like the last ones left", they just dont have that strong of dynamic especially when they are overshadowed as hell in there final chapter. And the comments bringing up how dr2s mystery progression differs from dr1s have put into words some alot of what these 2 games feel so different
However I cant agree with the akane slander lol
Banger video btw

Hidden gem. I think the group dynamic of the survivors is more meaningful than the individual survivors themselves, which is why out of all 3 games I feel THH’s survivor group is the only one that really works for me.

This is probably a coincidence, but maybe the reason the DR2 cast felt less connected was because Monokuma took over. If you remember, at the start of the game, Usami's goal is for everyone to become friends and gather hope fragments. That whole plan gets derailed after the killing game starts, so they wouldn't really have time to develop those friendships. Same technically goes for the THH cast, which is why I think the interactions in DR1 are better written

Only bad part about the survivors in DR2 is that theres no Mahiru or Ibuki

I agree, they should have definitely worked the dynamics of the survivors a bit more especially the big ol Soda

8:00 HE SAID HOPE!!!! HOPE MENTIONED!!!

Even if Akane doesnt feel like survivor material, I love her in chap 5, having her wanting to beat the crap of Nagito.

The encapsulation of the dynamic between the SDR2 survivors is the quote Akane gives in chapter 5 just before she decides to torture Nagito: “Man, we’re scattered, as usual…”

Fuyuhiko’s survival was probably in reference of dgr motif <Past vs future> since:
1. under the eye patch is junko’s eye- showing his past actions

2. Case2-2 He/Peko killed Mahiru for something of the past.

Also I left media for a week so I have a psychepfc video marathon for the rest of my day, love the vid &have a nice day:)

I can honestly see Kodakas point about SDR2 writing feeling more human and real than THH since even if we think of the first game cast as more "normal" or "realistic" characters we cant just deny that the human race is usually also conformed of people this aggresive and bombastic at least in a weird way. Of course real people are way more complex than fictional characters but can we really deny that we never feel or relate to some characters in SDR2 in some points in our lives? I can relate in some aspects to Kazuichi obsession since I was kinda of a simp in school just not to that degree, I can relate in a way to Impostor since I also had some moments where I wanted to take care of my friends and classmates, I can relate to Ibuki way of living a more vivid and crazy life trying to cheer up the people I care about and so on. At the end of the day THH cast and writing is more subtle and calm than anything in SDR2 but I think that can make the characters and story feel less relatable in a way while SDR2 feels more cartoony but has a great cast that is way easier for u to sympathize and care for. Is like...you can see THH mostly as a fictional story with fictional characters that achieved something and feels better from a writing point in the end while SDR2 is the one that should be the more absurd and stupid story but has some characters that can actually make u feel something more personal that THH cast really didnt achieved or was aiming to, making them at least a small part of your life even if it comes at the cost of an ending that feels less developed than the first one

The worst moment of yasuhiro when you need to prove Kyoko is not ghost to him

aa this voices my biggest ish with sdr2. i wanna like sdr2 so bad but i dont care about anybody, hajime doesnt really seem to care about anybody, nobody feels connected to each other and their friendship is told not shown. so many dynamics seem fandom made rather than canon established

4:29 mahiru guy, don't diss yourself like that bro

Thh survivor cast feels purposeful; intentionally set up that way. Dr2 cast is a little more realistic in that there’s no telling who will go; the scraps you’re left with at the end may not be what you wanted but it makes sense.
