In this video, I explain five lesser-known signs of autism that many autistic adults recognise in themselves. You may prefer texting or emailing because written communication gives you more time to process words, context, and your response. You might only realise hours later that someone was being mean, passive-aggressive, or bullying you because reading tone, facial expressions, and hidden social cues can be difficult in real time.
I also explain why autistic people may choose online grocery shopping despite the extra cost. Supermarket lighting, noise, smells, crowds, queues, and unexpected changes can cause sensory overload and leave you exhausted. Ordering online can protect your energy and reduce the risk of autistic burnout.
Another surprising autistic trait is researching your special interest when you feel close to burnout. Learning about a favourite subject may look like work to other people, but the focus, familiarity, and enjoyment can help you regulate. Finally, I discuss why advice can feel like criticism, especially when autism and ADHD overlap with rejection sensitivity.
If you are questioning whether you could be autistic, this video may help you recognise patterns in your communication, sensory processing, social experiences, special interests, and emotional responses. These traits alone cannot diagnose autism, but they can give you useful points to explore and discuss with a qualified professional.
