15 Epic Historical Action Movies With Massive Battles You Need To Watch!
Medieval cinema has a problem. For every Gladiator that breaks through, there are a dozen films nobody ever found and today we are going to fix that. From a Viking art film so uncompromising it barely qualifies as entertainment to the single greatest judicial combat ever put on screen — that belong on every list and rarely appear on any of them. Welcome back to movie verse. Stay for number one, because it is a film that cost $72 million, won five Academy Awards including Best Picture, and most people under thirty haven’t even watched it. And we have a very special mention at the end that sits above everything else on this list.

This list is built for people who already love Gladiator and Braveheart and want to know what else is out there. Valhalla Rising is Nicolas Winding Refn's hypnotic, almost wordless Viking art film — brutal, strange, and completely uninterested in being conventional entertainment, which is exactly why it belongs here. DragonHeart is a criminally underrated 90s fantasy adventure with one of the most underrated voice performances of Sean Connery's career. Black Death is a grim and atmospheric medieval horror-thriller that gets darker with every scene. Arn: The Knight Templar is one of the most ambitious European historical epics ever produced and remains almost entirely unknown outside Scandinavia. The Green Knight is a haunting, visually stunning reimagining of Arthurian legend that rewards patient viewers. Mulan: Rise of the Warrior is a sweeping Chinese historical epic with battle sequences that rival anything Hollywood has produced. The 13th Warrior brings Beowulf-inspired Viking adventure to life with a cult following that has only grown over time. Outlaw King is Chris Pine leading a gritty, muddy, and underappreciated account of Robert the Bruce's fight for Scottish independence. A Knight's Tale is pure medieval fun — anachronistic, charming, and far smarter than its reputation suggests. Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan is a sweeping origin story that most Western audiences completely overlooked. The Last Duel is Ridley Scott's brutal and morally complex account of the single greatest judicial combat ever put on screen, told from three competing perspectives. Excalibur remains one of the most visually ambitious and operatic Arthurian films ever made, decades after its release. The King is a stripped-down, grounded take on Shakespeare's Henriad with one of the most brutal depictions of medieval battle on film.
All of these are available to stream on Netflix, Prime Video, Max, Disney+, Apple TV+, Peacock, Paramount+, and Tubi.

Recommended “Samurai”, and Eisenstein’s Alexander Nevsky. And for a very mad look at German mythology, Fritz Lang,s Siegfried and Kriemheld’s Revenge, known collectively as Die Niebelingen. An amazing film where the character based on Atilla The Hun is the most sympathetic character in the film.
