As someone who deals with both mental health issues, and chronic nerve pain, I do feel for Velma starting down the path of addiction...but not the murders. No excuses for the murders.

My favorite simonism is the classic "oh no" when something bad happens to someone terrible

A total hysterectomy will throw the body into menopause. It can be a real rough ride both mentally and physically.  With no counselling, information about what could happen or hormone replacement therapy  it must have been a nightmare.

You might not have a middle manager telling you when you can go on holiday, but you'll have the school telling you instead 😂

I threw my back out recently. Got a nerve blocker once it got unbearable and I finally felt no pain for the first time in months. The need to not be in pain especially back pain is so real.

Notebooks sold out already!?
How am I not going to write down my crimes without this... 😪

She reminds me of Mary Ann Cotton, a 19th century British serial killer, who repeatedly killed husbands, stepchildren, and even her own children for life insurance pay outs.

I have trigeminal nauralgia and CRPS, the pain is constant. You became a different person when you literally dying from pain in every second you are awake.

The reason men at that time didn’t want their wives to work outside the home was partly influenced by the implication that they didn’t make enough money to support their families

I have to say, I feel totally different to the writer about this. She sounded like she wanted to be stopped, with asking for the autopsy and confessing to her son. Drug addiction turns people into monsters, and I think she realised she’d become a monster. Rather than for ‘control’ I think a lot of the murders were panic that she’d lose her source of income for drugs. The religious fervour was because she felt damned by her addiction and wanted absolution but couldn’t wash it off. Then just wanting to die to atone for everything.

Bruh, they didnt have running water or electricity. Those chores were full time jobs for her, she couldn't just run a couple of machines. 😭

3:10 shriveled up legs probably means continuous pain (with no medication or good support due to being dirt poor) to the point of wishing for death Simon…

Simon there are STILL people living in America without running water and electricity that’s never gonna change

9:00 It may not seem rational or fair, but often survivors of abusive/addicted households hold resentment towards the parent/elder sibling who failed to stop the abuse. Sometimes, it's even harder to forgive the enabler/fellow victim than the actual abuser. Shit's complicated, but it makes sense Velma hated both her parents.
It's infuriatingly sad that she never got any of the help she needed; her rotting into an abuser and murderer was not inevitable.

Unfortunately, many abused children blame the submissive parent more than the actively abusive parent for not protecting them.  Expressing anger at the abusive parent is dangerous.

2:50 - They were probably living a hand-to-mouth existence even before the economy tanked. Being a mouth to feed who couldn't work much if at all was, especially in an age before social services were much of a thing, indeed a fate worse than death.

Watching an episode about a poisoner, while suffering from food poisoning, hits different.  Like, wait… these symptoms could mean something else entirely😳

Only one hour and the notebooks are out of stock already 😢

No one drinks with friends expecting to become addicted, just like no one takes prescribed pain medication expecting addiction. For some people, something switches on in the brain after exposure. That doesn’t make one person more responsible than the other—it makes addiction unpredictable. I literally just turned in my final paper on this lol.

Unfortunately, in the richest country in the world there are still over 1,000,000 people who are without utilities or running water plus another approximately 3/4 of a million homeless people who are also without both.
