I feel like people need to realize that the international SMB2 was originally a Mario game. It was worked on by the same team that did SMB1, was prototyped as a Mario game, but initially wasn't working out as a full game. It had lots of good ideas, but at the time it just wasn't coming together. It was only rebranded to Doki Doki Panic as an advergame based around Fuji TV's Yume Kojo '87 event after Fuji TV came to Nintendo looking to make a game with the four characters that make up DDP's playable cast. Since the (at the time what would have been SMB3) prototype was already experimenting with multiplayer and multiple characters, as well as not really working out as a Mario sequel, it made a good fit. The development hurdles were overcome, and Doki Doki Panic was released. It was then converted back into a Mario game when NOA rejected SMB2(J) for being both too difficult, and too visually similar to SMB1, and needed an SMB2 to release internationally before SMB3 came out, as Nintendo didn't want to do what Square ended up doing with Final Fantasy and either skipping or renumbering games because sequels didn't release internationally.

It's amusing that despite trying not to, all the entries for NSMB games boiled down to "these are all the same" anyway, just focused differently. (IE, "the multiplayer is the only thing that makes it unique" or "it doesn't have a unique purpose," or "we're seeing the same levels too much", etc).

Mario Wonder feels shorter since it has basically 7 worlds instead of 9 while having more levels

mario land 2 is quite something. all worlds are fine. easy start, ramping up difficulty, then BOOM wario's castle! i've tried and tried but never even reached wario himself. the gauntlet to meet him is impossible for me!

It took me years to realize that they made two too many New Super Mario Bros. games - there, I've said it.

I think Mario Sunshine would’ve been better if there was more freedom in which Shine Sprites you chose to collect to reach the last level, kinda like how 64 and Galaxy were structured. Also, having a mission revolving around Chucksters was a bad idea

I'd say some of the "puzzle" levels in Mario 3 (i.e. certain fortresses and that one cave level in World 6) are basically a worse version of the Ghost Houses in Mario World. Some of them feel like things you'd really struggle to figure out without a guide

I would say the worst thing about Galaxy 1 is postgame content and the worst thing about Galaxy 2 is underutilization of its own unique content.

For Sunshine, my biggest gripe is the way you unlock the final level. Being based on beating certain missions means everything that doesn't progress you towards getting those goals had no purpose outside of going for 100%

Super Mario Land was my first Mario game, I remember playing it on my GBA a lot when I was a kid (I'm in my 20s), yeah the way you control Mario is hard to get used to, but once you do, it's an easy and pretty fun game.

I wouldn't say the Blue Coins were the worst part of Sunshine per se, but they are part of the bigger issue.

Sunshine's worst part is that it has relatively little content, and much of what it has is repeated.

For a start, you fight the Goopy Piranha boss five times at the beginning of the game. It is especially egregious that one of those battles is the first shine you obtain inside a course, just after having fought it twice in the hub world already (and you'll face it twice again in the hub world immediately afterwards). It's fair enough that this allows players to replay this boss fight, but the designers really should have broken up the monotony with something else at this point in the game, and saved the replayable Goopy Piranha fight for later.

Then there's the fact that there are only seven different courses. By all means, they are all great and I love each of them fondly, but the issue of repetition is quite notable. All of them have at least one episode devoted to the FLUDD-less Secret levels (most have two!), one for a Shadow Mario hunt, and at least one for red coins (plus the red coin challenges in the Secret levels, of course). Several bosses are fought twice. Il Piantissimo pops up in multiple courses too.

That's in addition to the 24 shines obtained through blue coins. All the repeated content makes up for a fairly big chunk of the game's 120 shines. Incidentally, there are as many shines associated with red coins, 24 in total, as with blue coins.

The worst things about about Mario 3 and World is that the fun eventually ends. 😥

Fro Sunshine, it has the feeling of being rushed out the door.  Some of it is golden, while other parts barely got one coat of paint on.  I heard someone say Nintendo got it to "finished" meaning getting enough Shine Sprites to get to Bowser and finish the game, but threw it out before getting to 100% completion.

2:50 What's really weird about it is the fact that Doki Doki Panic was actually built on top of a proof of concept for vertical scrolling Mario levels, so in a way, it actually was meant to be a Mario game.

I remember the thing I hated about Mario 3 was autoscrollling. It's either fake difficulty or, when you're good at the game, it makes for a lull before you can move on to the next obstacle.

I feel like the worst thing about Wonder is the lack of matchmaking in the Switch 2 minigames. I have no friends that have the game/want to play with me, so basically it is blocked comtent for no reason.

10:05 I’ll direct you then to “A defense of Mario 64’s camera” by PurpleColonel, which does provide evidence that it’s not AS bad as some people say

I’d definitely say the worst things about Super Mario Bros 1 are the looping castles, which turn the gameplay into trial and error rather than skill. You could definitely get stuck on them for a while. They aren’t even a decent challenge.

Odyssey's biggest flaw is the way you get the Toadette moons, no contest
Also thank you for the NSMBWii slander, always appreciated (it killed my grandma)

My biggest gripe with Sunshine is that Mario feels weightless, with no sense of momentum. You either aren't moving, or are going max run speed. Mario can change directions far too quickly and it feels janky as hell. In 64 and Odyssey, he feels a lot more natural to control.
