so utterly fascinating for us history buffs. Helms remains for me one of the most interesting characters from that era. A sphinx in many ways, urbane, polite, hot tempered at times, very circumspect. What a guy. It is of course now known that Nixon, Hunt and most likely Helms crossed their pathways in the early days of anti-Castro plans. Nixon as VP was totally committed to getting rid of Castro and he knew full well who Hunt was and what sorts of troubles that he could cause for him if he decided to spill the beans on stuff that could embarrass Nixon. If one considers the lectures done and uploaded to YT from lawyer Daniel Sheehan, then Cuba had many more secrets that tied into the bank in Mexico, the one that Helms professed to have no knowledge about. Its a much more layered and interconnected history, one that Sheehan excels at describing.
I had a paper route and delivered the Washington Post on the day when the headline said: “ Nixon Resigns!” The film “ All the President’s Men had some scenes shot in my neighborhood and us kids would go and watch the spectacle. We had a couple Dustin Hoffman sightings as I recall. Back then we didn’t know the part about the compromising and silencing of Nixon before he could speak up about what he knew about the JFK assassination in his own self defense. When I was a kid I believed the media saying Nixon was the problem and “don’t look behind Door number 3 where Carol Is stAnding” Oh the lies of mental children no offense to actual kids
Plasable Deniability. I am not aware. I do not recall .No recollection. I assumed. Unformilure. What a limited awareness Mr. Helms has of his own institution. Never know he was in the intelligence business. Most of the burglars were also involved in operation fourty.
Did I just spend 3.5 hours watching a 50 year old Senate hearing? Yes and it was fascinating! Richard Helms is just one interesting dude - hero or villain?
What a difference watching how these politicians get along to run the committee, compared to todays cut throat hacks who cut each other off and constantly interrupt each other.
If you are wondering what happened with Daniel Inouye at the beginning: Inouye was irate at Ehlichman the day before, and after questioning Ehrlichman audibly and deliberately said:"what a liar". He had the balls to say what everyone was thinking.
