instead of using apple cider vinegar each time you ferment feed, just include some of the water from the previous fermented batch, it will save you money without sacrificing effect. I make fermented foods all the time at my pizza shop - sour kraut, all kinds of fermented veggies, sourdough bread, hot sauce, gingerale, apple cider vinegar, etc. Just use some of the old to innoculate the new batch, works so well and without extra cost and trouble. Thanks! Great information. We ferment a lot of foods for us to eat, and I never thought of fermenting my grains for my hens. I’ve raised poultry most of my adult life and this is one of the best (and easiest) ideas I have ever seen. We live in the northeast and egg production goes wonky as soon as they molt and then the winter hits and even with a light in the coop it’s all food in and no eggs out! I am absolutely going to do this, not just for production but because it has to be healthier for my chickens. Thanks again! God Bless you and your family (and of course, your chickens!).

You can super charge the start up by adding bread yeast and dextrose (corn sugar) to accelerate the process. 1 packet of yeast and 1 half cup corn sugar or table sugar if that's all you have. You can also substitute molasses or add it but not too much.

I even added apple cider vinegar. I’m going to get the feed that you suggested. It’s out of stock right now at Azure standard, but will keep looking back.

What a great way to feed my girls. I’ve been mixing everything I got that absorbs water. I also include elbow pasta. That’s go nuts over it, beans work too and also add proteins. Peas probably easiest but and will work. Lentils. It doesn’t matter. Plug all these favorites in it. The girls just love it all. D.A.Y.F. Do All Your Feeds.

I was giving my ladies mash everyday but since they free range it gets wasted. Or I'm giving them too much idk? My tiny brown eggs are double yolks though so I'm not even complaining 😂

I make more like a light paste 50/50 water-food, so you do not loose all the water-soluble vitamins and minerals and also food doubles its size. It lasts 2 hours instead of 10 seconds vs feeding dry. Also dry food is bad because you loose a lot in the air/soil and they inhale it and that can cause disease if some food gets in their lungs.

From my feed store I buy a product called COB . Whole corn, oats and barley and molasses. It's priced very reasonable. I also soak it on my wood heater for a day untill it's swelled up . My hens laid eggs all through the cold winter. I also have laying pellets,oyster shell and ground granite for their crops to process the food . Happy girls.Cheers from Canada.

This method reminds me of sour mash my father used to tell me about when he was younger back in the old days that they used to feed to their hogs he also fed cooked potato peels in the winter when the hens were laying less eggs to get them laying again

I save some of the water from the previously fermented feed to start the new one. It makes fermenting the new grain take off faster. Once I started fermenting their grains I can’t go back to straight up dry grain. I feel like I’m preventing my chickens from receiving full nutritional benefits if I don’t do it 😅
