I'm 50 and became involved in the haulage industry aged 4 as a result of my father transporting boats with a Land Rover and trailer in 76, followed in 77 by a 19t Bedford TK tractor (VNH 391L. I need to get out a bit more!) pulling a single axle Freuhauf stepframe flatbed to accommodate larger boats. He was amongst the first to take formal HGV lessons/test after Grandfather Rights were restricted/abolished. At the time, he shunned the new technology that was ratchet straps, and insisted upon using ropes. As a result, I could tie a double dolly at the age of 5, something that I'm still proud to be able to do!
Lovely to see so many British made trucks, especially the Squirrel S***s (aka Marathon....(Who remembers that reference?!), and the Transcontinentals ( Despite Ford having the misfortune of originating elsewhere....). I remember both featuring in the old mans 80s fleet (along with V8 Ivecos (In my opinion, a nicer sounding engine, and significantly larger than the also awesome Scania alternative).) which had by then moved to containers, tilts and general haulage out of Flexistow dock.
From 1990-2018 I murdered the miles, spent a large proportion of it along that western M4 corridor, and remember many of the hauliers featured. And the prominence of steel! I spent many an hour at Cardiff, Ebbw Vale, Port Talbot and Trostre Works with the roof out of a tilt loading for Holland and Germany.....
Thanks for the nostalgia trip 👍
