I’m a foreigner and my wife is Dominican, and honestly, I don’t understand paying so much money for these resorts just to stay cooped up—especially in the Dominican Republic, with so many paradises waiting to be discovered. Foreigners get drawn in by all those luxuries, but renting a car and exploring the country—now that’s an adventure. Every time I go to the DR, my family and I go on a road trip; we drive, rent an Airbnb for the night, and then move on to the next paradise. Just imagine someone asking if you know the DR and you say "yes"—hahaha—when all you’ve actually seen is a resort. You don't really know the place at all.
