Copper Golem wouldn't have its awesome new purpose if it had won the mob vote so I think we owe Allay something

I used to be aight with phantoms until I started doing build projects on some friends’ servers. Mobs that can fly into you and knock you off a house while you’re building can genuinely make building unfun, especially when there’s no good way of getting everyone asleep

0:53 the thing about phantoms is that you dont need tovpunish the player for not sleeping. Mobs spawning already fulfill that niche. If you dont sleep, youre more likely to have a creeper blow up your base. In addition, nights still count when you are in other dimensions wheere sleeping is not possible. This makes it annoying to build in the nether or end because you have to deal with phantoms when you come back.

A mending nerf would be fine if anvils got rebalannced to not increase the cost of levels the more its used. Then the conversation can happen.

I think the reason Breath of the Nautilus exists is so that you cant easily just hop in and out of your nautilus to explore, which invalidates the water breathing potions

3:30 you... just need to take the item out of the allays hand...

12:30 there is no backing for me to think this but i think Mojang just straight up lied about the reason to remove fireflies, I think they removed it because it caused a lot of lag from there being too many small mobs together and they knew that saying that would lead to (kinda valid) backlash about minecraft being badly optimized so they somehow thought that saying that they removed because it was toxic to frogs would lead to less backlash (seeing how things turned out, probably not) and there was kinda some precedent for this from removing the ability to tame parrots with cookies.

I think its kinda obvious that the magma cube eating feature was kind of a rushed alternative they managed to think of in the little time they had, it seems like the logical feature would be frogs eating fireflies and dropping froglights in the process but since they couldn't do fireflies they tried to find the best alternative already available which lead to an unintuitive and badly designed feature

Basically i think the firefly situation was just something mojang handled really badly on the PR side but i do think Mojang didn't have any great options in that scenario, they just somehow chose the worst one

I agree with you on all of these points tbh especially The End dimension. I feel like giving it the treatment the Nether got is very unrealistic nor very original for the end. I feel like giving it a desert feel with some old ruins, random statues, liminality, and maybe an End Oasis biome to hammer in that arid feel would be the best outcome for The End.

8:45 Tiny takeover was just an alibi update, bc they did some nice technical stuff e.g. the /swing command, data driven trades and a lot of other cool under the hood stuff, but would have been a great time to bring in some basic parity features as well

I love netherite upgrades, they were such a cool addition to make it harder and bring more exploration- plus, for things like mods, it allows you to have more materials or structures required to be found to upgrade.

The interesting thing to me is I don't think many of these should be unpopular opinions, because I personally agree with most if not all of them. Granted I'm coming from the standpoint of a game design major, so my takes might be different to someone who plays the game more casually, but I digress

2:26 Good, because now it's way better and actually useful.

I don’t mind the idea of the smithing template, but just surrounding 7 diamonds around it in a crafting table is so arbitrary. It doesn’t make sense in the context of the “world”, it’s just because diamonds are perceived as valuable, it’s kinda lame. my alternative would be stuff that actually relates to the nether, like quartz, gold, or an extra netherite scrap, it doesn’t even have to fill the whole crafting table

Those videos are mainly watched by kids and teens, and since those are the main demographic of Minecraft, they get a ton of views.

For the argument about upgrade templates on multiplayer, I have created a datapack to counter the issue: Piglin bartering can give templates at a 1% chance. Super super grindy, and it would be much easier to go to a bastion, but there's still that option for players who can't find one/loot's been stolen

The punishment for not sleepimg at night is the fact that you're walking around... at night. That's what hostile mobs are for. Phantoms dont do anything to change that. They only come out at certain heights and outside, so there's nothing they can do to you if you're caving or just at a lower y level. It's not good game design, it's just an added (and incredibly weak) nuisance on top of other things

this video is equivalent to kicking a wasps nest, and im all for the rage. also you should make a video on your opinion of mincraft legends, i hav'nt heard much people talk about it

Here are my thoughts on each of your minecraft opinions as they come up:

1) The problem with phantoms is PRECISELY the fact that they punish you for not sleeping. Minecraft is already a pretty easy game, I shouldn't have any further incentive to not engage with night time at all. The punishment for not sleeping should just be having to deal with normal mobs, which are at least kind of enjoyable to fight, unlike phantoms which are not particularly dangerous but still a pain in the ass (especially when building or if - god forbid - you spend even a moment afk). In concept they're not necessarily bad, the idea of stronger mobs appearing if you don't sleep for too long is cool, but in practice they are just badly designed enemies: they are nearly impossible to hit, which doesn't feel fun to fight against at all. It's just terrible game design to have your game become noticeably less enjoyable if you don't play a certain way (sleeping). It's fine if there's a punishment for not sleeping, night time mobs already kind of do that, but that punishment shouldn't be PHANTOMS.

Also, them dropping phantom membranes is kind of a bard argument? You could have the best-designed mob ever that drops nothing, or the worst-designed mob that drops awesome stuff. What an enemy drops doesn't really indicate if they're well designed or not.

On the topic of nerfing mending: what exactly would that accomplish? What would that look like? Why exactly is it 'overpowered'? I've never understood that. To me, mending isn't overpowered at all. In fact, in an ideal world, I'd get rid of tool durability completely, but that's MY unpopular opinion lol.

2) I  don't really have anything to say about your allay take. I literally forgot these guys existed. They're kind of useless? Except for early-game xp farms i guess.

3) I also like Netherite Upgrades! I think they're a good mechanic. I can understand why it would be frustrating in multiplayer, but that's kind of a problem with multiplayer in general, since the exact same problem happens with Elytra. One way to fix this would be to use the trial spawner/trial vault system (or something similar) in bastions and other structures, with some vaults being openable only once per player. I think that would be a good system; the trial chambers in general are a great addition and I think its a shame that Mojang doesn't the use the systems they created for the trial chambers in any other structure.

4) Nothing to say abouts masons. they're useful i guess. never really used them much.

5) Breath of the Nautilus is a better option here than water breathing. If mojang had made Nautiluses give you water breathing, you could stay underwater forever by just hopping on your nautilus every once in a while. Breath of the Nautilus, however, is a different effect; it only pauses your breath meter istead of filling it, which is better for balance reasons. Also, making "How did we get here?" harder to get is actually a bonus in my opinion.

6) I don't think your end opinion is that unpopular at all. As you said, lots of people are adding trees and mobs and loads of new structures to the end in their mods and such, but just as many (if not more, recently) are only asking for smaller changes (and there are mods that reflect this).  Basically, I agree with you on this point, I just want to point out that a significant (and potentially even a majority) of the community agrees too. The "Better End' mod, for exemple, which is the prime exemple of the "Let's make the End just Nether 2" phenomenon, has become much less popular in recent years.

7) I don't really understand your aversion to people finding minecraft mobs cute. I guess I can kind of see your point, if what you mean is that mojang shoudln't add features just because the community will like them, but revamping old textures and models is completely fine? You said so yourself: Mojang WAS improving an aspect of their game.

8) I have 0 opinion on Minecraft Dungeons 2.

9) I don't really have anything to say about your suggestion of adding a full turtle armor set. I guess I just don't care about it? I'm fine either way.

10) I'm pretty sure most people agree that 1.9 combat is good. It's just pvpers who are used to spam clicking that are mad about it, since thety had to learn a whole new meta. You'll notice that as time goes on and people grow more userd to the new system, backlash for it has diminished greatly.

11) I have no opinion about fireflies.

12) I completely disagree with you about 'bloat' biomes. They're not bloat, they're there to make generation more diverse. It's better to think of them as sub-variants of existing biomes, and mechanically they ARE since they only spawn next to those main biomes. They only count as full biomes on a technicality, because it was easier to implement them as full biomes rather than revamp the whole biome system. I don't mind them.

That said, I DO have gripes with 1.7, since it got rid of some world gen features that I liked.... I like the current world gen, but there are some parts of old world gen that I miss dearly :(

13) The minecraft videos you're talking about are made by content farms for children, many of which don't even really play minecraft at all. That's how they get such huge view counts even though everyone hates them.. I think you'll find that your opinion of them is the opposite of unpopular among the community.

14) I completely agree with you about bedrock. I think it should be wiped off the face of the earth and replaced by Java on every platform.

Eh, phantoms are poorly designed, but they have a neat idea.
Sleeping is good for you irl, but that does not explain why not sleeping should be punished in the game, as it already lets you skip the night. It's punishing the player for not avoiding difficulty. The intend probably was to add a mob to the pool for when you are out exploring for long stretches of time, but it also fails miserably in that regard based on how it scales, the longer you are out the more spawn, which is especially detrimental since phantom combat mainly revolves around singling out single phantoms that swoop down.

1. Phantoms punish you for not sleeping, which is already punished by hostile mobs spawning. There’s just no reason we would need another mob to do that. Besides that they’re great mobs.

2. Allays can be very useful. Also, you can kill them, just not when they’re holding an item.

3. I agree

4. Masons are fine, but Librarians are definitely more useful

5. Breath of the Nautilus is most likely meant to keep you from just being able to easily attain infinite water breathing by just taming a mob

6. I agree, it’s meant to be a desolate place, it just doesn’t need to be quite so empty to achieve that

7. Tiny Takeover was fine. I do really like the sniffer idea

8. No

9. I agree, full turtle armor would be really sick

10. I agree, the combat is wayyyyy better now. Also, I find it funny that everyone wants an end update, but the one end update we’ve gotten was the most controversial update (not because of the end features, but still)

11. I don’t care that much, the ambience is still there

12. Yeah, for all of the problems with the newer biomes, at least they’re no just nonsense no one can tell apart from other biomes

13. I agree, it’s just slop content for kids

14. Yes, I would rather not play minecraft than play that disgusting version of the game
