"You're all trying to finish a story before someone has a baby."

As a GM trying to keep my game  alive after a kid entered the mix, I felt that.

Ms Di, I would like to express my appreciation for the attention you put into your subtitles. I'm not hard of hearing but I do have ADHD and, as you probably know yourself, having the subtitles on makes audio processing significantly easier, even if I don't read them!

"Math Rocks go click clack." LOL me for a minute and a half straight.

I love "I write what will happen if the players don't intervene"! I always have places, puzzle, plot beats sketched out, but I really want my players to change and influence the story; adapting is a huge part of the fun for me. Also, at the end of my last campaign, our warlock brought a piñata of her patron to break open and the cleric hit that thing clear across the yard. I'm not giving them swords.

There are GMs whose first instinct when a player actually wants to talk to a big scary inhuman monster instead of going straight to the stabby-stab isn't "Yes! finally I get to RP as the dragon!"? I don't believe you.

The book tells you that you don't have to add extra consequences for rolling with hope and fear, you're allowed to fall back to giving or clearing a stress for that.

When Ginny said "A little glass vial" I can't be the only one who repeated it.

I've started GMing a Daggerheart campaign myself, and so far it's been a really unique system that I and my players enjoy quite a lot! There have been moments where my players take over the world building just because they're excited about something, and I've been having a lot of fun rolling with their punches and seeing new ideas I would never have thought of before!

I am struggling with one of the mechanics of the game, though - Fear. I love it conceptually, a resource that I can pull from to make scenes more exciting. However, we've had a few roleplay-heavy sessions and there's not much I can do with Fear while a story is slowly unfurling. I'm lucky enough to have good intuition when it comes to the shape of scenes and stories, so I simply describe things like I would in a system like D&D, and I sometimes delete a fear or two based on the vibe of "yeah, I guess that feels like a shift I caused, sure." I would love if you looked at what GMs can do with Fear and how they can best spark new developments in the story.

Ginny: “It’s a dictatorship, but hopefully a benevolent one.”
Me: sharpens narrative dagger “Benevolent…ish.”

Love the Daggerheart content!

9:25 has big 'Hank Green as The Fix(did you know 50% of your bones are in your hands and feet?)' energy

I don't know if there are many others like me, but while I'm not playing Daggerheart, I am tackling Narrative GMing for the first time. (Legends in the Mist in my case). Narrative GMing is HARD if you're not used to it. To make things worse, being a narrative player is also HARD. A lot of Daggerheart advice applies to any aspiring Narrative player, and I appreciate it.

The part about allowing stuff in roleplay via rule of cool and what makes sense in the fiction is why I love games with lighter narrative-focused rules in roleplay but crunchier tactical rules in combat like Lancer. The combat rules only get broken out when there's a seriously big, epic clash about to happen, not when you're trying to choke out a single guard or whatever.

I am kind of tangential to D&D, having run every edition at one time. This video made me suddenly inclined to buy and run Daggerheart, because the advice is pretty much one-for-one all the best practices that I have accumulated, and sometimes manage to practice, over the years. Thank you Ginny!

“The DM can fudge rolls, hand out impossible DCs and murder your party’s allies off-screen without so much as a dice roll” flashes back to my first DM declaring that my ranger’s animal companion had burned alive in a cage with no chance to escape

I'm glad you are doing this series, I was wondering if it was just me and I kept feeling that DaggerHeart really really makes it very important to have a level of creativity that I and my players are not experienced at bringing to our table.  You are the first person who has pointed this out.  This makes me feel seen as a D&D is really easier for me to run than Dagger Heart would be.

6:36 just gave me a paradigm shift. I never thought about writing notes for if they don't interact with the world.

13:05 About the pressure to be infinitely creative at every Fear roll - I´ve felt this pressure very intensely the first 5 sessions, then I just gave up and started to pressure players to fill these gaps 😅 If I don't have something dramatic I just reiterate the rules (e.x. "succes with fear implies you get what you wanted, but...") and let the whole table spitball ideas, meta conversation is encouraged after all.
Plus, with time I've adopted this little tidbit from page 150, "if all else fails, give them Stress", not as a failure but as a budget, makes it a lot easier.

I will admit that I'm not the best when it comes to straight up fly by the seat of my pants GM, but I find myself often turning to that because my players beat a section in my prepared notes I thought was going to last longer than it actually happened, and I often forget to think about NPC notes making roleplay more nervewracking. I do like the idea you suggested from DM Jessie about "Writing what will happen if the players don't intervene", which I think is a brilliant way to reframe a session in a way that encourages more open ended improvisation. It actually reminds of me Monster of the Week's countdown for GM's which is basically a series of escalating bad things that will happen if the players don't defeat the monster quickly enough or interfere with it's plans.

I ran a game where an ancient Netherese arch mage was collecting souls for his soul forge, gathering power to raise his city back into the air. Half way through my sister decided that her mousefolk trickery cleric was tired of being scared all the time. He wanted to be the thing that went bump in the night, so when they got to the city he hunted down a temple of Shar and made a deal. Instead of stopping the ritual, he would take control of it and give the power to Shar. They did, and the campaign ended with my sister's mousefolk cleric ruling over a flying city. I expected my players to fight the evil wizard and save the world. Instead they beat him up and stole his flying city, and frankly I think that's better! :D 10/10 campaign

One thing that helped me get good (or at least better) is leaning on collaboration: listen to your players! let them do your job! Let them worldbuild for you sometimes + ask them what they hope for or what consequences they envision for their actions.
