IDK. There’s a lack of definition in the bottom end. It seems like note separation is a bit messy. It could be a bit more wooly and a bit less sparkly. Also, there’s something there on 1345,32 Hz that bothers my ears. . . . . I’m trolling, guys. Nice video!!
In about 30 years Gibson or Fender will reference this video as the perfectly imperfect pickup that they’ve figured out how to recreate for their new line of (old) guitars.
I was making low impedance pickups like this, with a JFET preamp since around 2005.
Rick Turner of Alembic fame did pretty much exactly what you did… winding by hand on a ceramic magnet for the early Alembic pickups.
One thing you neglected to add to the cost of the pickup is your time. How long did it take you to hand wind that coil? How much are you worth an hour?
It takes me 10 minutes to wind 8,000 turns using a hand guided coil winder.
Next time make a wooden or plastic (or even aluminum) platen with the shank for the drill. Attach the coil with double stick foam tape.
I downloaded an app that counts the winds. I made a spindle by putting thin wood on either side of the magnet, and used masking tape and super glue to hold it on the rotary sanding disc in the drill. I embedded a small magnet that the app senses as it passed. I wound 7500 revolutions in about 20 minutes. Worked great.
The Jack Black style storyline was fantastic. So was the music! Not sure if it's just the pickup, but there is a really unique and soulful tone here. Excellent.
My brother in christ, drill a pin-hole in the magnet to put a screw in, attach it to a spindle, and use a fishing reel loaded with the copper. It's basically the same setup that boutique pickup makers use. Otherwise, no notes, love it.
Ameture jewler responding! Instead of glue, next time maybe dopping wax would work! We use it to fix delicate gem stones to small wooden dowels so we can hold them against grinding wheels in the shaping and polishing process. If it can stand up to that there's a solid chance you can spin it. Face shield and eye protection, though, please...in particular when using tools outside of their normal use cases!
It reminds me of Danelectro Lipstick pickups, Dan was trying to do a magnet with less money, so he did a pickup made to fit inside lipstick enclosures from a feminine cosmetics factory nearby
