Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has taken its wartime message directly to the American public, issuing a 26-page open letter addressed to US students, academics, journalists and ordinary citizens. At the centre of the letter is a demand for the United States to close its roughly 800 overseas military bases and bring American troops home. The IRGC argues that Americans are paying the price for Washington’s foreign policy through military spending, overseas wars and support for Israel. It calls on Americans to push their government to end what it describes as endless wars and redirect resources toward science, advanced manufacturing and the domestic economy. The letter also attempts to distinguish between the American government and the American people. The IRGC says its “Death to America” slogan is directed at the political establishment in Washington rather than ordinary Americans. The document traces the history of US-Iran tensions from the 1953 CIA-backed coup against Mohammad Mosaddegh through the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the Iran-Iraq War, sanctions, the shooting down of Iran Air Flight 655 and the killing of Qasem Soleimani. It also challenges US claims over Iran’s nuclear programme and criticises Washington’s support for Israel. The letter ends by calling for what it describes as peaceful coexistence between Iran and the United States, saying Iran does not seek hostility with ordinary Americans.
