The opening scene of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a masterclass is storytelling. Beautiful use of music, cinematography, dialogue, acting, direction - everything is pitch perfect and emotionally impactful. I cannot recommend this game enough.

The fact that we know this character for all of... 10 minutes??? And that scene STILL made us cry?? 10/10. Masterpiece...

I stupidly played this the day after my partner's funeral. He died of cancer... At 33. I can't even begin to tell you how much this scene had me literally sobbing and still does. I sat with him for hours on his last day but made the stupid decision to come home that night (he was living with his parents at the time). Literally a couple of hours later his dad called me and there was a few moments of silence and he just said "he's gone."
I've never wailed when I've cried but I did that night. It still plays on my mind that I wasn't there when he took his last breath. And that I didn't just visit every day regardless (at his request because he didn't want me to see him so I'll).
But yeah... Every time I watch this scene... It hits me on a deeper level than most. And my heart breaks even more 💔

The writers of the game did an amazing job of making you feel the love between those 2 even though this happens in the first 10 minutes of the game, such a great game so far

The Cruelest Inevitability in life is watching a loved one die and knowing there is nothing you can do to stop it but only provide comfort.

This scene is what made me switch from gamepass and bought it on steam. Need to support games like these. Soooo incredibly made.

My son in law was playing this game with me and my daughter watching. It broke us all. He said the moment he seen Marie fade while holding her daughters hand...hurt his dad heart. His daughter is 2. I have not cried during a game in years. They did an amazing job.

One of the small artistic choices I think a lot of people miss is after the gommage, Gustave sits on that bench facing the monolith with his head down and the Paintress sits facing the city with her head down. The symmetry is an echo of their pain chef's kiss

Best opening scene in gaming history. It literally caught all of us, grown men included.

That “im here. I know, I know” with the delivery and and music and time to let the emotions sit gets me every damn time

As a father, it’s the kids hugging and burying their faces that gets me every time.

This game is a masterclass from installation to credits.

The way the music cuts right when the paintress wakes up is so incredible.
The music doesn’t resolve either, it’s a cut, and it makes you hold a breath that never concludes, like a gasp, and during that gasp you watch as the paintress draws the number. It’s 100% the same exact feeling the characters are feeling too. That stillness of breath when it happens, and the sinking of the heart when 33 appears. I can’t with this.

The fact that we saw this happen in the advertising and yet it still caused so much heartbreak shows how powerful the writing, cinematography and music is. The city tries to turn the Gommage into a celebration of life, but when it actually happens, everyone changes.

- The dark humour used at the start to try and make light of the situation -> Gustave crying at Sophie’s death
- The boys in the masks fighting -> Them shielding each other from seeing their parents die
- Gustave deciding to be with Sophie, putting aside their differences so they can spend their last day together -> Him struggling to maintain eye contact as he watches Sophie die
- The mother who wasn’t worried about the Gommage -> She was struggling to fake a smile
- The parents that were with Maelle all waving goodbye to their now orphaned children
- The way the Paintress wakes up changes the number then sleeps again like it was no big deal
- The fact that petals were falling from the sky in celebration of life but now they are rising up in the reality of death

More cinema in this intro than in the last 20 years of hollywod

You know there's a HUGE amount of talent behind this game when 10 mins in you feel like you've known the characters your entire life. 🙏🏾

How did this game make me care about a character fast enough to cry when she dies. I feel manipulated

her dub was sooooooo good. the second "I know" 2:56 almost crying was perfect, she was scared, although she was trying hard to not look like it for him...

I'm a 32 year old man, and I freaking bawled my eyes out when I was playing the game during this. and it hurts watching this scene again in others playthrough, the devs did a tremendous job.

ive seen that gommage (Erasure in French) scene so many times with other reactors and EVERYTIME it brings me to tears. As a bald, big bearded almost 40 year old man, im blubbering like a little boy everytime. Well done to the Dev's and VA's and musician just amazing.

3:54 The slight wandering of the eyes, the minute upwards twitch of the eyebrows as his posture staggers. Struggling to grasp the current reality and understand the event that had just passed. His gaze falls to the ground in defeat as the moment consumes him entirely. That scene only lasts about 5 seconds but it's an incredible 5 seconds. Conveying so much emotion in so little time. The motion capture and editing to include all those micro-expressions is probably one of the reasons why so many people connected so quickly with this game.
