Uganda has no coastline — yet it could sit at the center of a potential $36 billion transformation of East Africa’s oil and energy corridors.

Two proposed mega-projects could reshape East Africa’s strategic energy map: Tanzania’s proposed $20 billion Tanga Regional Energy Hub and Kenya’s proposed $16 billion Lamu refinery.

And between these competing coastal gateways sits Uganda.

Uganda is landlocked. But its oil production, pipeline connections and export routes could give it strategic importance in the competition between East Africa’s major Indian Ocean corridors.

This is not simply a story about Tanga vs. Lamu.

It is a story about who controls the infrastructure connecting Uganda’s oil to the coast, where petroleum is processed, which ports gain strategic importance, and how Tanzania and Kenya are positioning themselves for East Africa’s future energy trade.

In this video, we examine:

• Uganda’s oil and export corridor
• Tanzania’s proposed Tanga Regional Energy Hub
• Kenya’s proposed Lamu refinery
• The pipeline routes linking East Africa to the Indian Ocean
• Tanga vs. Lamu and the competition for energy infrastructure
• Why Uganda’s landlocked geography may give it unexpected leverage
• What these projects could mean for Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and the wider East African economy

The central question is simple:s

If Uganda has no coastline, why is it at the center of this $36 billion energy corridor competition?
