In an eight-goal thriller in front of 66,000, Dundee failed in their attempt to claim a third League Cup title against the then current European Champions Celtic.

Billy McNeil and John Hughes fired Celtic into  two-goal lead before George McLean pulled one back for Dundee.

Steve Chalmers restored Celtics two-goal lead with 17 minutes left but this was followed with a Jim McLean goal that was then cancelled out by Bobby Lennox to make it 4-2.

With five minute left, George McLean scored his second goal and Dundee's third but 60 seconds later, Celtic made it 5-3.
