I remember two parts that really creeped me out and stuck with me since were:
- In the library room in the otherworld school after a while you can listen some knocking on the walls at completly random intervals
- An empty room with metal fences in the second basement of the hospital, you can hear some knocking on the fences, but there is nothing in there

I agree the hospital 4th floor was probably the most profound creepy moment here. Some honorable mentions that creeped me out:

- Intro sequence as it gets darker and then the fallen wheelchair. Man, those camera angles! The music here is especially creepy too.
- Silent Hill transitioning in real-time outside the boat/lighthouse (only really scared me the first playthrough)
- Seeing the abandoned amusement rides at the end of the sewer
- Re-arranged path after hospital to the moth boss
- Air screamer glimpse out the cafe window
- The mystery behind the tentacles in the hospital and the refrigerator
- A school classroom where the Nowhere basement should be
- Just how short and jarring the bad ending is... gosh. Cheryl's dead - roll credits!

Can’t wait for the inevitable “Ranking EVERY Room in Silent Hill”

The number 1 scare on this list was my introduction to Silent Hill. My sister has rented it and when I was visited she was just arriving at the hospital. I knew nothing about the otherworld, the monsters, nothing..... so when all this shit went down and now the hospital was the stuff of nightmares and those nurses....and the sounds they made. It scared me like nothing scared me before in gaming.

I Believe This it's The Most Scary Silent Ever made

I remember playing the hospital section during the day just because of how creeped out i got playing Silent Hill at night. Then i get to that 4th floor moment and realize no matter what i do in game or real life. Silent hill will always get into my head and creep me out. "I could have sworn there were only 3 floors!!" i thought. There's no way im checking out the 4th floor I thought. So i went back to the 1st floor and saved. It's not until a week or so i finally got the courage to continue playing

The craziest thing about this game when you play on the hardest difficulty you can do a semi behind the shoulder first person and the enemies are double in numbers and double in strength.makes the game way scarier

Crazy how a PS1 game has more details in the level designs than fucking Silent Hill Townfall, like wow a concrete room, wow a concrete hallway, wow another concrete room with red lights and pipes, ooooooohhhhhh!

This is THE game that heavily benefited from system limitations. And by the gods of warp, this game belong in there too.

6:38  this moment here is so iconic. I remember hanging out at a friend’s house and I think his dad owned the game. I remember seeing it sitting next to the PlayStation and saying “what the hell is this?”  So I decided to pop it in.

My taste in horror has never been the same since. Nothing like this had ever been done before in gaming and I think this sequence is one of the best intros ever among horror games.

You’re absolutely right about Silent Hill 1 being the scariest and most underrated. There are so many moments to choose from.

Not creepy moments per se but the Otherworld hospital and sewer levels scared the crap out of me. The Cybil boss right also broke my heart first time around.

love how this video is constructed! am not as familiar with the original SH but still enjoy this a lot (thanks for including the contexts for some moments ;p) -- I especially resonate with your point about how games treat their animal is a tell-tale sign! I also find that kind of "meta-horror" where you as a player is deprived of control is more chilling than just jump-scares and lores

It was a real WTF moment in the Otherworld version of Midwich where you realize that going into one of the first floor bathrooms inexplicably transported you to the second floor, directly above where you thought you were.

Any particular reason why you were playing the Japanese version?

SIllent Hill 2 vs Sillent hill 1 is Purgatory vs A Father Searching For Daughter in a Hellish Town Full of Monsters.

I fundamentally disagree that Lisa was corrupted by the forces of silent hill.

She was always a manifestation of silent hill. She probably always had a sense that was the case, but didn't want to accept that. When she finally does accept it she's scared and seeks comfort in Harry, however her behavior and admission to being a silent hill manifestation confuses and scares Harry so much that he pushes her.

This is what I think most people miss about this cutscene because it's a little janky. I missed that that’s what happened for years, but it seems clear now that he pushed her and she hit her head on the way down.

Lisa isn't bleeding because she's transforming into a silent hill monster, she's sustained a very real injury and now her blood is pouring down her face.

Harry, once again scared, confused, and probably a little guilty,  doesn’t know what to do and so he abandons her. That's the tragedy of the scene.

In Asian countries such as Japan. The number 4, along with 9, are their equivalent of what is 13 in Western countries, where in Japan it's Yon (よん) or shi (し) . And as you can see written here, despite having their own kanji. Shi with this kanji (し) can also mean death. And for 9 it's ku (九), and like 4, even though this has its own kanji. ku (苦) can mean pain, suffering, agony.
