You are like the English teacher I wish I had in High school and even though I have been a book lover all my life , I do still struggle with comprehension at times, which makes the reading tougher and less enjoyable, which makes your post so timely and relevant. I own that book, have never read it, but could tell it's a gem.Time for me to read it now, thanks !
There must be thousands of Youtube channels on reading/literature but this one, by far, is my personal favorite. I admire the air of authority without being intimidating; there is no semblance of arrogance. I love the soothing yet commanding voice. And the knowledge and information; I have learned in less than 10 minutes what I could have learned in a regular lecture. I am grateful that I found this channel on this gray, cold New York City morning. Cheers!
I like to learn about the history and the locations of the books I am reading - fiction and non-fiction. So I will google places and historical events, people in history, etc. This really enhances my reading experience and I also learn a lot. Sometimes I get caught up in a research rabbit hole and find an entire new interest.
i started reading at a really young age, and never stopped, i like to think that i have good reading comprehension skills, which was proven while i was still in school, in french, philosophy, and english classes, but lately i've been felling like i can't put into words, or describe correctly what i have just read, but still remember the important details about the book, so it got me thinking wether i'm reading the correct way (which i believe there's not really a correct way to read, as long as we enjoyed the book, and understand it), and so i came across your channel, and watched a couple videos, and it is helping me make peace with myself, and feel less burden while reading, but still trying to be better at it, thank you.
Also something I think that helps a lot is disconnecting as much from your phone as possible. The social media driven society we live in has us glued to our phones. Quick, dopamine rewarding doomscrolling is destroying our attention spans.
Thanks for let me discover this great book: "How to Read a Book". I'm reading it and I love it. "... the error of assuming that to be widely read and to be well-read are the same thing..."
I always feel like my comprehension of books is pretty high, but I am amazed at how only certain books stick with me at all, even among those I rated as liking a lot. Sometimes even reading the description doesn’t jog my memory, but if I tried to reread it, I probably would remember it - at least that’s the way it works with movies.
I think I’m going to have to start doing little book reports, especially for my non fiction reads. Night shift brain doesn’t retain information like it used to.
I'm a language teacher at the secondary level.. these are concepts I teach at the basic level but have yet to master myself. HTRAB is a treasure in my personal library that I have read only partially but have received tremendous value from. Thank you for this video.
