At this point, I'm just happy to have convertible coupes. I couldn't afford it, but I'm glad they're still in the game.

As an owner of a 20 year old Miata, this car is pretty cool.  Top down driving is magical in the right conditions.  If you can pay six figures for car like this without without hesitation then good on you.

The blooper the kept in makes this better.

Bought a CLE 53 for my girlfriend and she loves the way it looks and that’s why we bought it, she can care less how fast it is or how it sounds.

Here's an idea!  Start building the NA V8 again, charge 15 grand less and get people fired up for this car.  Call it the CLE550.  Old tech that was far better than this.  The inline 6 is a fine engine.  It's just no V8 and at this price point, that's what we want.

A convertible review but where is Baldilocks to tell us about aerodynamics?

Got the predecessor E53 Amg coupe, over 106'000km and 7 years old, has been a solid and great car without any issues. Wouldn't trade it in for this but nevertheless the CLE53 is a relief in todays cross over world

I’ve been driving the 220d version as a rental in Germany for a couple weeks. Here are some impressions:

- true four-seater. Took a 400km drive with two kids and my wife, luggage, car seats, etc: no problem.

- air cap looks horrid but helps the kids have a more comfortable top-down experience

- comfortable as a GT and handles well for 7/10 driving.

- diesel is not exciting but returns hilariously good fuel economy: ~45mpg for my autobahn trip with four people and luggage. I drove around 160 km/h when I could. The soft top is a bit loud above that.

- looks: A+ here. I used to have an e93 m3. It always looked awkward to me. This is beautiful from every angle even as a soft top convertible. There was a CLE 53 amg parked at the grocery store this week. I just sat and looked at it for 15 minutes.

Surprising take on giving this the edge over the LC500.

Since neither of them are true sports cars and the numbers don't matter, what does matter are the intangibles

Design, build quality and visceral enjoyment are what these cars are about.  The Lexus seems to blow away the CLE53 in all these fields, at least based on my seeing and hearing these cars in person.

Say what they may about the car as a complete package, the matte black mercedes does looks so good on the lines of their coupes.
