The greatest King Arthur movie ever made and it's not even close.

1:06 - Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for government!

"Excalibur" is considered by many to be the best film adaptation of the legends surrounding King Arthur. The screenplay is based primarily on "Le Morte d'Arthur" (The Death of Arthur) a 15th century work by Sir Thomas Malory based on the legendary stories.

Criminally underrated film. I have always just loved it.

The moment with Uriens holding Excalibur while Arthur kneels in the moat is among my favorites.

It's not only meant to be a test of resolve for Uriens but it's also a representation of how Arthur was able to turn his most bitter enemies into his loyalist of friends

I love how Nicol Williamson playing "Merlin" steals every scene he's in :)

"Is Merlin a good guy or a bad guy?"  Yes.

NO ONE reacts to this masterpiece. I never clicked so fast in all my life.

Jen, the reason Merlin was freaking out over the sword is Arthur broke it... which was supposed to be impossible. He then tossed it back into the water believing himself unworthy of it. The Lady Of The Lake saw this and judged him worthy after all. She fixed the sword and gave it back to Arthur. Merlin had never seen her do anything like this before. Hope that helps. Love this movie for decades. I grew up reading about Arthur from various stories. This is by far the best Arthurian movie ever made.

The coolest and most dramatic shot is when the Lady of the Lake catches the sword and pulls back into the water. The lighting and music wraps-up the entire story perfectly. Gives hope for the future of mankind and a warning.

A dream to some, a nightmare to others! Never gets old.

This is the film where Liam Neeson met Helen Mirren. They were in a relationship for many years. When Liam first saw Helen in full Morgana costume, walking towards him, he turned to his friend and said, "****ing hell". 😍🤩

"Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government." Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

At the end, the three fairies escort King Arthur´s body, over a golden bed, to the fogs of Avalon. In there, he would be buried.

Fun fact: it was the first movie of both Gabriel Byrne and Liam Neeson. Gabriel Byrne was a teacher and created a small theatre company, and Neeson was one of the amateurs that played in it. John Boorman hired them because he wanted some unknown local faces for his movie.

39:54 No weapon forged by man can pierce Mordred’s armor.

No man forged Excalibur!

The first time I watched The Next Generation I said "That guy was in Excalibur".

Jen, what you might be unfamiliar with is that this is essentially the full Arthurian story, taken specifically from Sir Thomas Mallory's Le Morte D'Arthur. This includes Pendragon's taking of Igrane, Arthur's birth, the sword in the stone, all the way to Camelot, Guinevere and Lancelot, and the rise of Mordred. It's quite a story and it's a shame that most filmmaker's usually only take one part of it. John Boorman's film is wonderful, if a little stagey. Boorman originally wanted to make a version of Lord of the Rings, but they just couldn't do Tolkien justice as a  live action production in 1981 and it was changed very early in production to being an adaptation of the Arthurian legend, with some fantastic cast choices, costuming and production design.

I get shivers every time I see the moment the lady of the lake catches Excalibur, holds it and then it disappears into the water with that music!

Such a great film!
