When I used to be a captain in a league team, I almost never saw anyone play a safety shot. I would always tell my team members that unless then can run out all the balls (which most can't do), they HAVE to play a safety to keep their opponent from running out the remaining balls. It seems like they never listened. If you watch professionals, they will play safety after safety after safety until one player makes a mistake, and often times that is on the ONE ball! If professionals need to do it, everyone needs to do it.

Great advice Joe Being a novice at pool I try to make most of the shots that I think I could make but end up leaving my opponent with ball in hand or a good shot I now intend to incorporate at least two safety shots per match and anticipate better outcomes

I wish you weren't using the 9bal for those demonstrations because many of them looked like juicy carom shots to make the 9 ball instead of playing the safety.

I’ve had to adopt this strategy having joined league play. Went from an APA 3 to a 5, so It does help with leveling up but one thing that fades on the greater stage of league pool is the aggressive “magic” shots. The younger generation loves “safety battles” so that’s a plus i suppose! I find it boring beyond belief but necessary… Just my two cents.

Shooting too hard killed my position and safety play. Learning to do just enough helped a lot on both. It also depends on your opponent, playing a known better player, I think IF the safety is there ans doable, and even if you have a shot, if you can’t run out, play the safety. The best ones are where the cue ball also ends up touching or very near a different ball than the object, because then they can’t jump it.
There are times when the shot is easier than a safety, but again if you can’t realistically run out, make the shot with an eye to a position after to play a solid safety.
The pros do safeties all the time. 3 or 4 safeties a match doesn’t seem much to me. I’m often playing one or two, or more, per game.
Watch out for safeties where the opponent can legally hit the ball and give you a worse safety.

I can’t remember who said this, “Don’t show me how well you can pot the ball. Show me how you play safeties. Then I’ll tell you how good I think you are.” Learn to play like Mark Selby.
