Tara Erickson & Roxy Striar react to Drag Me to Hell (2009), the gleefully twisted supernatural horror film directed by Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Spider-Man) that blends outrageous scares, gross-out gags, and dark humor into a modern cult classic. Returning to his horror roots, Raimi delivers a relentless, fast-paced nightmare that’s as funny as it is horrifying.
The film follows ambitious loan officer Christine Brown (Alison Lohman – Big Fish, Matchstick Men), whose life spirals into terror after she denies an extension to an elderly woman, Mrs. Sylvia Ganush (Lorna Raver – They, Carnivàle). In retaliation, Ganush places a horrifying curse on Christine, condemning her to three days of escalating supernatural torment before being literally dragged to Hell. As Christine desperately searches for a way to break the curse, she’s supported by her skeptical boyfriend Clay Dalton (Justin Long – Jeepers Creepers, Accepted), whose disbelief only heightens the film’s tension and tragic irony.
Iconic moments include the grotesque Lamia attacks, the infamous séance sequence, the shocking parking garage confrontation, and the jaw-dropping final twist that cements the film’s reputation for cruel, unforgettable endings. With its exaggerated sound design, practical effects, and Raimi’s signature camera work, Drag Me to Hell walks a razor-thin line between terror and absurdity—making it one of the most memorable horror films of the 2000s.
