ADVANCED WATERCOLOR EXERCISE - COPYING A PAINTING BY JOHN SINGER SARGENT

Rajiv Surendra

Watercolor is one of the most difficult mediums to paint with. Today I'm joined by my incredibly skilled teacher, Marcelo Daldoce, as he shares one of the methods used for centuries by artists when learning how to draw and paint: copying the works of masters. Marcelo demonstrates by copying a watercolor of a scene in Venice, painted by John Singer Sargent over a hundred years ago.
*Note: The studies shown in the intro of this video were all painted by Marcelo!

As a watercolorist, I don't think the average viewer has an inkling of just how brave (and talented) Marcello is to not only paint a master-copy after Sargent, but to do it with an inquisitive student in the room AND it's all being recorded on camera! Wow. Massive kudos, and thanks to Rajiv for sharing.

This video is so underrated. It’s rare to get such a deep insight into the steps involved in creating a watercolor painting. I don’t know of anything else like it

This is genuinely one of the most amazing things I've watched. I cannot believe how well Marcelo was able to copy the piece, and so grateful for his explanation of his process throughout. Wow.

It’s a real pleasure to be able to follow a master like Marcelo in such detail through every stage of his work on this „recreation“. I’ve been following his Instagram channel for a long time and the short videos there are already very instructive, but this video is invaluable, not least because he’s been so generous in sharing every little step and the thought process with us. A huge thank you also to Rajiv for making this possible!❤

Marcelo's comments as he painted are a real gift to all of us who aspire to watercolor, thank you both! The final painting is fabulous too.✨

I enjoy all your videos so very much Rajiv.

My mom is a water color artist. She taught at our local community college for 30 years. I always saw her paint in these layers. I enjoyed watching her build a beautiful colorful transparent painting with wonderful shadows!

My mom is 86 this year and doesn't paint much now but she still sells her prints online. She graduated from Parsons in fashion but watercolors became her passion.

I never tried water colors but my niece has recently taken it up in her free time. It is so nice to see. We all have our own artist talents in our family but you always remind me of the true passion my mom has had for the arts her entire life. It is next level, innate.

My parents now live in a senior residence. I see my mom struggling as she can't do what she once could due to recent health issues but she engages in games, book club, and works on puzzles daily to keep her brain cells moving.
She still might paint something if she is inspired but is frustrated by the elements of age.

She will always inspire me through the love of the arts she gifted me and her art that now covers my walls!

Be well and continue to enjoy your love of painting!

Wow!!!!! This is pure gold. what a nice present from Rajiv to have this class with such an excellent teacher, it is very valuable not only how he paints but what he says. Thank you so much!

This was a masterclass in watercolor painting. Thank you both for gifting us this video! ❤

My gosh...Marcelo has. BEAUTIFUL HANDS !
He should be a hand model !!!!!

Perhaps better to consider and call it a master study rather than a copy. We all need a Marcelo. I’ve looked for an in person teacher but blessed with YouTube tutorials,Skillshare and Patreon in its absence. Fabulous video and exchange and process. Best insights I’ve seen yet. Thank you both for sharing and giving back. May it return to you 10 fold.

You create such an inspiring atmosphere, and what I especially appreciate is your calm, knowledgeable approach—it’s something you rarely find. Thank you for finally offering something with the mindset and attitude of true watercolor artists. And thank you for the summary.

Listening to Marcelo I actually understand! He’s a genius

My show is on! 🍿🍿

Marcello's overlays are so incredibly helpful to explain the layering process. Then to watch him implement this in one setting is such a great way to teach, so very meanful. I found the discussion of the palette very informative as well. Thank you both so much. I learned a lot.

This is going to be a gem! Thank you

What a privilege to watch and listen and learn from such an accomplished artist as Marcello. To learn to paint is one thing, to learn to think your way through a painting is entirely another skill. This was invaluable. Thank you so much Marcello and Rajiv!

Raj, did anyone ever tell you that you have an accent similar to those in West Texas? I was laying down in bed falling in and out of sleep, and when I heard your voice, I thought it was Gabriel, my friend from Odessa. Wow, in my half woken state I thought he was in my place. Hahaha....I listen to YouTube through the night like listening to the radio, and my algorithm brought me to your videos...Oh well, if no one cares about my little anecdote, at least I do...

Did Vera Hart’s archetype quiz and immediately sent it to two friends. Not because I’m convinced by it yet. I just need to compare everyone’s results now.
