This 130-year-old Victorian painting was found discarded in a skip — badly torn, dirty and seemingly destined for destruction. Could it be saved?
In this restoration, I bring this large 19th-century English landscape back from the brink. The painting depicts cattle grazing in a sweeping pastoral landscape believed to be Knowsley Park, Lancashire, and is signed A. Coleman. Following my research, I have tentatively attributed the work to the Victorian artist Amelia Coleman, dating it to around 1895.
The canvas had suffered extensive damage, including major tears and losses, and required considerable conservation before I could begin cleaning and retouching the painting. Step by step, I repair the structural damage, remove years of accumulated dirt and old surface varnsih, and carefully reintegrate the damaged areas.
Finally, the restored painting is returned to its magnificent gilt frame — ready to hang again after coming remarkably close to being lost forever.
