Thanks to your video, a couple of resistors and a replacement infrared LED, my Amiga mouse that broke in the mid 1990s is working again.

That would have been a good opportunity for the factory to pick values that just barely work, knowing that the parts will drift over time. Expect replacement orders in a few years!

I guess the reduction of signal from the phototransistor might be from their translucency reducing with ageing of the plastic.

I do think ‘mushy’ buttons are a good thing - too much of a hard ‘pop’ is annoying to use, and it’s the main problem I have when replacing tact switches. The replacements have higher operating force than originals did when new.

I have several dead mice that I will now tune up (probably by substituting resistors) - previously I was swapping phototransistors with mixed results. The only problem is that now the market will be flooded with repaired tank mice 😂

Those amiga mice are hard to come by in the states. I believe you can use them to boot the Amiga CD32 into a special menu to switch it between pal and ntsc to allow different region games to load.

You should just replace phototransistors - not messing with resistor values. They might degrade even more with time.  Good informative video!

Mitsumi may have made reliable mice, but they are the manufacturer that made the drive heads of the C64 1541 drives, with the close latch. More of those drives died than any other 1541 drive manufacturer... The heads break or short out and never work again. Rumor has it the heads are supposed to be sealed, full of dielectric grease, sealing the head from corrosion, but mitsumi didn't do a good job sealing the heads, allowing corrosion to occur. They may make good mice, but caused the death of thousands of otherwise good 1541 drives...

Your overhead camera has made an editorial decision: "we don't need this footage, it is redundant".
