Early Dungeons & Dragons combat wasn't loose, arbitrary, or improvised by the DM.

I break down early D&D combat procedures (focusing on B/X & AD&D), and explain what those rules were actually designed to do. This isn't a history of where D&D combat comes from. It's an examination of how early D&D used structure to manage risk, control pacing, and make danger legible to players before initiative was ever rolled.

➡️ What “combat procedure” means in early D&D
➡️ Why B/X and AD&D formalized combat when OD&D did not
➡️ How Basic D&D used procedure as a teaching tool
➡️ What these rules reveal about early D&D’s assumptions about play
➡️ How modern editions changed or removed these ideas
➡️ Which old-school tools still work today

This is a measured look at what we lost, and what we can steal back. No ranting or nostalgia. If you enjoy thoughtful D&D history and system analysis that explains why rules existed, this video will give you a new way to think about combat.

💬 Do you still use morale, reaction rolls, or other old-school combat procedures? Let me know in the comments.
