He was known as the strongest man of قريش. In a quiet mountain pass of Makkah, رُكانة رضي الله عنه wrestled the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, put his own sheep on the line, and lost every fall. What the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم did next, and what رُكانة رضي الله عنه said afterwards, is not the version most people have heard.

Many of you have asked about the wager, since gambling is forbidden in Islam. This event is reported to have taken place in Makkah before the Hijrah. In one narration, Rukānah RA offered sheep from his own flock as the stake. After the wrestling, the Prophet SAW returned the sheep to him and kept nothing.
Scholars discussed how this report should be understood. The majority held that the event occurred before the prohibition of gambling, while Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim held that this particular wager served a religious purpose, as the wrestling was intended to demonstrate the truth of the Prophet’s SAW message. The report itself is mursal, and Allah SWT knows best.
