I attended this game. It was my only visit to Stillwater (nice town). It was a frustrating day. It seemed like we turned the ball over almost every time we had a chance to score.
I was at this game as OSU student. We stood the entire time. Although a loss, one of the more memorable games when I was student in near upset of great team.
How could anyone watch this game and not think Jimmy Johnson is a brilliant talent ? Thank God he wound up in Dallas and Jerry had a momentary moment of clarity to give Jimmy complete control.
That 1983 Nebraska team was called the Scoring Explosion because they had one of the all time prolific offenses of any era of college football, but that particular Blackshirt defense was ranked 47th in the country on average in many catergories that got overlooked because they were putting up so many points early and often that many times opponents have to abandon their game plans.Remember Jimmy Johnson played for and coached under Frank Broyles at Arkansas, coached with Johnny Majors at Iowa State and Pittsburgh, and was with Chuck Fairbanks,Barry Switzer, and Larry Lacewell at Oklahoma,so he had a feel for what it was like to compete against Barry Switzer and Tom Osborne in the Big Eight, but once he got to South Beach everything changed. The main reasons why that 1983 Nebraska team failed to win the National Championship was they used the 5-2 bend but don't break defense that didn't matchup against sophisticated Pro Style offenses, they didn't have an elite pass rush, enough athletic defensive backs that could cover receivers and a placekicker that could make kicks consistently inside of 40 yards.๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐
As great as they were in 1983, NU struggled in OK in 1983, winning this one 14-10 and won at OU 28-21. Probably their only close games other than the loss to Miami. Who, ironically, Jimmy Johnson would within months become head coach of. Great job by OSU here, who under Pat Jones the next year would be a super 10-2 bowl winning team.
Those OKST uniforms are awesome. Prior to losing to Miami in the Orange Bowl, this was Nebraskaโs closest game of the season being a 14-10 victory. I wonder if Thurmond Thomas would have been a redshirt freshman in this game??
