Chuck borrowed a valvestate from me when we were opening for them in Denmark on a couple of gigs, we were supposed to do Dynamo Festival 1998 with them, but our drummer had to go home. So chuck hade the valvestate at Dynamo festival, and then he shipped it back to me autographed, we had a lot of fun in Christiania. Nice memories

So I guess it’s my Marshall Valvestate you hear on live in Eindhoven album

@TaylorDanley it's always weird to watch videos covering the history of something I was a part of, and then have to decide whether I should bother to correct the record or just let it remain uncertain and mysterious, lol... but in this case I decided to butt in. The photo of Chuck in the studio that you included in your video, the one taken during the Spiritual Healing sessions of him sitting on a stool in the studio, is actually my photo. I took it with my crappy little Kodak Disc camera, and the amps you can see behind him in that photo are mine and his... we both played rhythm on the album, I think I'm in the left and he's in the right, but after all these years I'm not that certain, I'd have to listen to a break where it's just me playing to figure it out. Anyway, he was playing the Randall, boosted with his trusty DS-1, and I was playing the Marshall JCM 800, boosted with my long-serving TS10, which you can actually see right below his foot in that photo... it's the green pedal. His little orange guy is off over to the right in that photo. So there you go, hope that helps fill in some gaps 🤓

I was a teenager when Scream Bloody Gore released. You had to be there. At the time, it was absolutely not considered thrash. It was the very definition of deathmetal. The main difference between it and heavy thrash such as Slayer, Sepultura, or Possessed were the gutteral vocals.

My former band Nihilist ( from Atlanta,GA ) recorded a few times with Scott Burns at Morrissound, we were booked the week after Death wrapped up the Human album. Anyway, the tones are all Scott. He had a very refined way of recording and it all went to tape pretty much as it sounded on the final mixes with very little done in post. A TAC Scorpion console, 4x12 single speaker mic'd with a SM57 and a 421 and blended. Sometimes he would quad track and other times he would only double track. All to a Studer 2in tape machine. As for drums he would always take the front kick drum heads off and he had a set of wooden beaters he would insist the drummer use, he would then close mic the kick ( D112 I think )
Chuck was a nice guy, we played with Death a few time and he'd drop by the studio when we were there. Always very chilled and humble.

I discovered death right after my best friend died. He was in a car wreck that put him in a coma. His family decided to pull the plug 😢 and literally the day after that I was listening to Sirius xm Liquid Metal and Jose played the song pull the plug. It hit me right in the feels man. Fuck I still think about it to this day. After hearing that I was obsessed. I still am. I’ve been listening for almost fifteen years and I could NEVER EVER get tired of death and chucks legacy. The pure emotion in his music speaks to my soul. Rip Austin. You would’ve loved Death. ❤ thanks for this video man seriously

I find it interesting that you said that Carcass is a contender for the first pure Death Metal album, to me they always had more in common with Goregrind than Death Metal on "Reek of Putrefaction"

I have this 92 Guitar World you're talking about and there was a croosed interview with Chuck, Allen West and Richard Brunelle. And Chuck said he used a Boss DS1, "just the standard orange one with three knobs" and joked about the HM2 saying "they carried things a bit too far with that one" 😂

11:18 The orange DS-1 is visible in the studio picture, behind the chair.

Death Metal had no blastbeats when it started. This element came from grind bands who used to share stages with Death Metal bands and who flirted with similar audiences. Accelerated Thrash riffs combined with sower tremolo picking supported by double bass drums thundering under growly vocals depicting gruesome events defined what was Death Metal, to generalize. What you refer to in most of your video is the second wave of Death Metal which added in blasbeats, lower tunings and took a more technical approach. Early Autopsy is a perfect exemple of oldschool Death Metal, in my book.

@iamlato 1 year ago

vocals are 100% the primary differentiator between fast thrash metal bands like slayer and early death metal bands like death and possessed

@TonyHookedonVanlife 1 year ago

Yeah, the T-75 loaded speaker cab totally nails the tone.

I built some preamps for fun and I can tell your observation makes sense: Valve state has a 10nF cap, no resistor between the guitar input and 1st op-amp stage, jcms have 10kOhm series resistor + 100nF cap. There's enough bass allowed through by the 100nF to require a mid forward boost for extra tightness, while with the 10nF in the valve state there's really not much going through in the lower zone. The missing resistor also explains why the Valvestates' IC1/TL072 fails so frequently from static surge
-- if that is a double-post, then sorry I really couldn't find my earlier one though I know I wanted to post this some time ago...

I'd say you got pretty close bro. Great video. This and the Black Dahlia video have been my faves so far.

There's also a photo of chuck using a Randall rg100es and a ds1 in the studio for spiritual healing on the relapse rerelease

I feel something that is often overlooked when talking about Death is that Chuck really only worked with the best of the best. Chuck had a vision and these people who wrote and played with him knew how to best compliment it. I feel a ton of Tech Death bands today wouldnt be the same without Steve DiGiorgio, Bobby Keoble, Gene Hoglan, or Shannon Hamm.

I remember reading a Chuck Schuldiner interview on some (already at the time) ancient web site 13-15 years ago during the peak of my Death worship, where he said the band didn't use pedals after Human. Like apparently at all, I understood their live sound was just the guitars going directly into the amps?

The Valvestate portion of this video cracked me up because the moment you turned it on, the sound was almost perfectly what Symbolic's guitars sound like, and every single tweak made it sound less like it IMO.
