Inside an AH-64 Apache at 15ft | Chasing a Chinook

This is what it looks like to fly low level alongside AH-64E Apache gunships from the back of a CH-47 Chinook.

During my time embedded with the South Carolina Army National Guard, I joined a Chinook crew for a low-level flight with AH-64E Apaches flying alongside us.

From the open rear ramp of the CH-47, we flew through South Carolina with the Apaches manoeuvring around us — giving us an incredible view of the aircraft in flight.

We also captured the formation from the Apache itself, giving you both sides of the flight.

This is the raw experience of flying with AH-64E Apaches from a CH-47 Chinook.

Chinook has to slow way down so the Apache can keep up. People don’t realize how fast a Chinook really is.

The title should be, "Two Apache helicopters trying to keep up with a Chinook ".

@danovercast9282 2 weeks ago

Unladen CH-47 is FAST. Once the cargo is gone, not many helicopters can keep up with Chinook in a straight line.

My dad was a pilot of private planes, who always wanted to fly helicopters. He even volunteered to fly helicopters in Vietnam, but they refused him because of high blood pressure. When personal computers started being bought in your average family home for the first time, he immidiately got ours setup to fly simulators. With a HOTAS and pedals. The very first thing I ever did on a computer, was learn to fly Jane's F/A-F18 simulator and Comanche helicopter simulator. I was in elementary school and learned that before learning to even use a mouse. One day, in elementary school, we even had a Chinook land on our baseball field as a demonstration, I guess. I'll never forget that moment as long as I live.

When I a teenager, I heard at the time that you had to have unassisted 20/20 vision to fly a for the military, and I had worn glasses since I was 2. Lasik surgery was still brand new, and like now, still had its problems. My eye doctor said he had doubted that my eyes could ever be corrected up to unassisted 20/20 vision, in any way. And with that, the dream I had held since I'd first learned to read, of flying aircraft for the military, died completely. I'll never forget that day, either, for as long as I live. I've never stopped being obsessed with military aviation.

Now I'm almost 40, and have a career in IT, of course. And because I was once diagnosed with depression, I've given up on getting my private pilot's license because I know I wouldn't be able to, with that on my record, anyway... This video made me very sad, but thank you for posting it anyway. I loved it, even if it was heartbreaking, to a degree. Those who do get to fly are very lucky people.

160th 2006 khadimiya iraq. I fast roped down on to the roof of the hospital. Secured the rooftop then a chinook hovered, dropped the ramp on the roof and unloaded 20 paratrooper then bounced off into the night. Speaking with them at speicher a few nights later I was floored because they were going on about how bad ass WE were for what we do but its the opposite. I went to them to drop off a bottle of scotch and tell them how amazing they were. Army aviation is something else

Chinook is a beast.

Was an Apache mechanic when I first joined the Army. Great bird! Went to flight school and flew the Chinook for 15 years. OMG, she is the BEST! Apaches can barely keep up at Sea Level; put them in the mountains of Afghanistan, and we were flying with no back up. Good times, though, because that's when the A-10s and freaking B-52s gave us XCAS. Those were the days.

props to the Ch-47 drivers and the AH-64s Army Aviation!

I think most people would be surprised by how fast the Chinook is.

Oh do I miss my old office. Given the opportunity I’d fly it again. Driving the 64 was an absolute fantastic experience.

I rode in a shithook back when I was active duty. I deployed in 2007 to Iraq. We took them into the green zone to the FOB from the airport with apache escorts (under cover of night). Not a comfortable ride by any means lol Flares popping, rear gunner shooting 5-7 round burst and the smell of jet fuel stays in your nostrils and mouth for the whole ride after staging outside waiting to get on. An experience ill never forget lol
