Even if the sun is shining and the sound of birds singing and the sounds of a flowing river or stream, if we are depressed or unhappy or anxious we are not interested in our surroundings. Artists try to give meaning to themselves because they are not focused on their surroundings but their inner solitude and subjectivity.
This brings up so much! Thinking of all those actions ‘in space’ I am reminded that in writing (as an act) what we express in the act is translated from a three dimensional world into the two dimensions of ink on paper. I have a friend who is an artist working with virtual space who started out as a poet: I music ask her if she explores the act of reading and writing in that virtual ‘three-dimensional’ space! Few people write these days: we all type (me, badly and slowly with two fingers!) Do we thereby miss out the ‘gestural’ act of writing (akin to movements in dance and marshal arts and what the psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott calls “the spontaneous gesture”?) Perhaps we are further alienated from genuine self expression and ‘presencing’ by being forced thus. (Yet again, there is still ‘rhythm’ in typing so akin to musical self-expression.) I never stop finding new things in Merleau: cheers! Laurence Burrow
But which particular print of Merleau-Ponty's are you referencing? I love the quotes you bring up but I can't find them in the Merleau-Ponty aesthetics reader copy that I have.
