How small can an antenna actually be?

In this week's video, we're finding out by building a tiny 6.5cm quarter-wave ground plane antenna designed to receive signals around 1.09GHz... and then using it to track aircraft!
With nothing more than some very simple materials and a cheap RTL-SDR USB dongle, I build the antenna from scratch before connecting it to the computer and seeing what we can actually receive.

The result? ADS-B aircraft tracking using an antenna that's barely bigger than your hand. ✈️

This is exactly the sort of project I love about radio: you don't need a huge antenna, expensive equipment or a complicated setup to start experimenting with the invisible world of radio around us.
