Dr Gavin Ashenden, former chaplain to Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, gifted theologian and Catholic convert, has become one of the most popular Catholic voices on the internet. Viewed as a Chesterton-like figure, his Substack and YouTube videos are followed by tens of thousands of faithful who rely on his scholarly expertise on the life of the Church.

In this interview, he gives a rare insight into his conversion, what led to his forced resignation from office, his assessment of the previous pontificate, and whether he holds valid orders.

Trying to get people to convert to the Catholic Church under Pope Francis was indeed very difficult. The ambiguity under his pontificate was a cross to bear for the whole Church.

It is most unfair to refer to Gavin as a “Chesterton like figure”. He isn’t half so fat as GKC. That is not a criticism of GKC - his girth was more than equalled by his mirth.

Whats your view on the SPPX?

In Roman Catholicism the honorific monsignor is referred to as being a member of the papal household. Although no Catholic would presume that that means that they are a spiritual advisor to the Pope. So I am wondering what actually is the significance or the importance of this convert to Catholicism.

Will Ashenden be another John Henry Newman?

Very interesting interview. However, it would have helped those of us with hearing loss if the host's microphone worked properly. It sounded like his voice was being picked up by Gavin's lapel microphone.

Ah yes, Rev Gavin Ashenden, part of a rota of roughly 33 to 36 Queen's Chaplains….

My God. You attack the Anglican Church, and the King, you attack the monarchy, all so that you can revel in the praise you get from petty right-wing ideologues. Your ego is showing. Please have some humility. Have you even forgotten Paul in your quest for celebrity? "Never act out of selfish ambition or vanity; instead, regard everybody else as your superior. Look after each other’s best interests, not your own." (Phil. 1:3-4).

Gavin, you’re a great theological talent…but I’m worried you’ll be disappointed with the Catholic Faith once you get to know it at grass roots level rather than limited to catholic celebrities which a former Queen’s Chaplain will naturally feel is where they belong.
