In this #masterpiecefriday edition of #thedailydoug, I'm diving into one of the most iconic rock and roll albums of all time...it's the fourth studio album from Led Zeppelin! As we listen to side one, we'll hear Black Dog, Rock and Roll, The Battle of Evermore, and Stairway to Heaven. It's an epic side of music, and I had a great time listening and sharing my thoughts. I hope you enjoy as well!

Battle of Evermore is such a wonderful departure so early in the album.

I watch a lot of reactors. Doug's ear, insight, and musical knowledge make for top-notch analysis. And he's just fun to hang out with. 🥳

Jimmy Page is so good. He had the concept, produced it, engineered it. And then played the guitar.

No digital. No auto tune. No AI. Analog perfection. It still amazes.

So great to go back to the era of organic music, with a human touch to everything we hear: no quantizing, no snapping to grid, no robotic click track, no pitch correction. Interpretation instead of engineering, performance instead of production.

Black Dog - John Paul Jones wrote the riff. The band found it difficult. Bonham decided just to plow through, keep the straight beat, and wait for it to wrap back around in time again. It's definitely a bit discombobulating! 😂

That Black Dog riff is just deliciously dirty.

I love Battle of Evermore because no matter how cool you think Zep is, they're nerds! (I mean that in a loving way, I'm a nerd too). Lord of the Rings might be cooler now because of the great movie adaptations, but back in the 70s you were fully a nerd if you read those books. Proof that being cool and being nerdy are not mutually exclusive

Unbelievable that as a music person you've never listened to these albums in their entirety! You've missed so much of their iconic music and the importance of hearing how Jimmy Page placed the songs within each album. Also listening to the albums out of order doesn't highlight how they developed and changed. Glad you've finally got around to hearing them. IMHO as a 72 year old who's heard all genres of music Led Zeppelin is the greatest by a country mile. Really enjoyed this Doug and can't wait to hear side 2.

Saw them in Madison square garden in 73 and they opened with rock and roll. Great start

Perfect analogy when you said "it feels like it's been here forever"

I’m so sorry I missed this yesterday. This album was my gateway to Led Zeppelin and won my heart.

Rock 'n Roll used to be one of our songs when i sang in a band back in the '70's.

Battle of Evermore is a masterpiece

The battle of evermore ❤

When the “bass” enters on “Stairway To Heaven”, it’s actually the left hand of the electric piano part. The bass guitar comes later.

Plant later referred to Stairway as "naive". He is reported to have payed a radio station a lot of money to stop playing it. Said that he would get a rash if he had to sing it every day. Interestingly enough, it remains one of their most loved, iconic work. I've always loved it and think it's beautiful. Can't help myself.
