Join me as we conclude our four-part listen to the iconic 'White Album' from The Beatles. I'm pleased to welcome authors Andrew Wild and Alberto Bravin for a brief discussion about The Beatles and this album. Then, we dive into side four, which includes the iconic Revolution 9...which I purposely avoided knowing too much about before hearing it for the first time. I hope you enjoy!

“Revolution 9” into “Good Night” brings me to tears. Genius.

It's time to stop messing with the radio, it's your bedtime. Lovely.

Savoy Truffle is gorgeous. Branford Marsalis thought so, and so did Ella Fitzgerald. And I thought so too at age 12. And still do.

That's how you end a long album that has taken you on such an adventirure

You can always go back to the White Album and it will be a new experience. It doesn't get old the way we do.

The White Album still affects me the same as it did when I first heard it (way back in '68!). I wouldn't change a thing.

It took me years to realize that Revolution 9 makes sense and that there is a rhythm to it. And that is scary.

I was 10 years old when I first listened to this album. Revolution 9 sounded normal to me because I had already listened to Pierre Henry, Stockhausen, etc. Eight years later I recorded my own avant-garde piece and I actually used an old short wave radio which was at my godmother's house. I even received complements from the conductor of a philharmonic orchestra.

Goodnight gives me goosebumps every time...so beautiful

Frank Zappa didn't care much for the Beatles, but he said that he did like Rev #9. Yes, he was a fan of Varese, Anton Weber, and Arnold Schoenberg, it's no surprise. Personally, I was fascinated by the song and listened to it all the way through each time I played the album. If you listen closely, there is a certain rhythm, dynamic, and intrigue to the sounds laid out in its passing. Then the transition to Good Night, is simply surreal. At the song's conclusion, I always, and I mean always, longed for more. Keep them coming back for more, certainly plays out here.

The combination and sequence of songs on an album is part of the experience. The 'supportive' songs between the bangers gives you time to breath. This albums greatest singular moment might be when 'Good Night' starts, but that moment wouldn´t happen if we didn´t listen to Revolution 9 right before it. Another great moment is on Abbey Road, when 'I Want You (She´s So Heavy ends)' and 'Here Comes The Sun' starts. After 8 minutes of building sense of doom, the sun rises yet again. What a contrast!

George Martin was araoung when HArrison recorded the saxes on Savot Truffle and when Martin heard it he said, "It's a bit hot isn't it.?" Harrison responded, "but I like it like that".

Reading the "lyrics" to Revolution 9 is one of the silliest ideas I've ever heard.

Goodnight always sounded like a Disney movie to me

Probably one of the most perfectly timed lightings of a medicinal pipe ever.

For me, there is always two first listens to an album. There is my initial reaction, and there is the Doug Helvering reaction. Watching you hear these beautiful pieces for the first time makes me feel almost exactly as if I am hearing them for the first time along side you. I closed by curtains and listened to Revolution 9 and Good Night with you, and I was in tears by the end. Fantastic music. Thank you Doug for sharing these experiences with us.

To me, The Beatles led us, almost always positively, and we were more that willing to go along for the ride. Such a thrilling time to have lived through.

In Savoy Truffle, when sings “you know it’s good news” what he means is the box of chocolate related treats is called Good News. All the treats he mentions come from that box.

@rghilino6734 1 month ago

George is almost literally reading a list of the chocolates found in a box of Good News Chocolate in Savoy Truffle.

Revolution 9 is pure genius. Many of the sound effects were taken from an album put together by Jac Holzman of Elektra Records (1964), who later went on to sign The Doors.
