The powered connector is cool! The entire consist has pickup! Methinks this would increase the overall reliability of the loco, especially over questionable track.
One thing i do love about Tomix, is you can buy complete powered chassis's to power anything like a custom built loco or even for use in HOn30 type trains. For the record Dave...when i came across your video, i was actually watching a classic anime called Galaxy Express 999...lol.
A very love model to pick up, Dave! As far as Kato vs. Tomix... it is Ferrari vs. Lamborghini. Folks will have their favorites, but it is a no-lose situation. From what I understand listening to those in the know, Tomix can be "prettier" but more temperamental at times. In the end, as you learn their nuances, both will make you happy.
I like the new obsession Dave. I am all N scale, but I'm sticking to North American Passenger and Freight trains for now. It's cool to see what else is out there.
Tomix does make nice stuff, the SE conductive coupler is fantastic, and part availability through third parties (ie, stores) is generally better than for Kato (who does most stuff direct, and not to overseas).
I do have some complaints about them though. Their lighting kits are more expensive and confusing (there's currently two widths made in two colour temperatures, there used to be more), though are easier to install than Kato's; they've had questionable judgement with plastics in the past, meaning white and grey parts on some models discolour and turn yellow, orange or brown (the 1990s/2000s 100 Series and 300 Series Shinkansen sets are notorious for this); some of their models have zinc pest issues (the 300 Series Shinkansen again, the 1990s version is just one to avoid); there's no detail in the carriage connectors for their Shinkansen models (Kato does this far better); and Tomix makes zero effort whatsoever to support DCC. Most of their stuff is still made in China as well, though some have been moved back to Japan; Kato does nearly everything in Japan.
There are vendors in the Japanese community that sell PCBs you can install to add DCC (eg SmileSound), but these are kits made in small quantities and you sometimes have to deal with forwarders. They're not like a lot of Kato models which you can just drop in a pair of FL12s and an EM13 to get functional DCC (AFAIK even the electric and diesel locos have broadly the same design as their American range, and can generally be made to accept one of the American decoders).
I don't consider them really better or worse than Kato, just different.
This is an amazing set! Never had a Tomix, but now I won't be hesitant to get one! Also the power connecting coupler is an amazing idea! Love everything about it, and now I need one as well...
Lived a few years in Japan and rode the Shinkansen a few times. Awesome train and comfortable ride. I never had a car while I lived there in Nagoya. Rode the subway and JR lines to work and back each day. Really looks like a winner there Dave!
