I’m surprised this discussion of race did not involve the kardashians co-opting Blackness.

We need to stop using the term "optimization" when it comes to cosmetic procedures. It assumes that normal ageing is a problem, suboptimal, flawed. I really don't want to normalize everyone getting (or feeling like they need to get) cosmetic procedures.

What Kim and Kanye are doing with North West right now disturbs me.

The discussion of Armenia as part of the middle east conceptually is odd from a European perspective. It is part of many European committees/bodies, functions as part of Europe, and is culturally part of Europe and Central Asia. Armenia borders Türkiye, and was also part of the USSR. Within Europe, there's an understanding that the boundaries between Europe and Asia are permeable, more of a gradation - Eurasia is really the continent that both belong to. The understandings of European-ness and race in the USA seem to be different from those within Europe, maybe related to the fact 'white' Americans come from a very small number of European countries

Phenomenal intellectual conversation about an anti-intellectual topic. Well done!

A great conversation about the ambiguity of race in different cultures is bittnia’s “can we stop pretending race is real” that discusses how identity is so personalized compared to the stereotyped idea of what “hallmarks” a certain race.

One of the most damaging effects of this family is turning life from one focused on subjectivity (how do I feel, think, etc.) to one focused on objectivity (how do I look, sound. etc. to others). Thinking of ourselves as objects that exist to be perceived, to be sold, to be "perfected" has got to be seriously damaging on a psychological level.

Could we please learn what is and isn't Central Asia?
Iran, the east of Turkey and the countries you keep mentioning are in western Asia.
It's a little bit like Americans forgetting that the Indian Subcontinent is also Asian.
Like there's a color chart where the browner parts are "clearly middle east"

As an Australian (not a bot haha there's a bot "hey from Australia ergh)... thank you for this conversation as we have the nickname Ausmerica because America does influence our culture here too. It's interesting how they are perceived over here as well and this whole thing was fascinating. I want to re-listen! Book is on my list of books to read (and ask the local library here to stock)

So full circle - I started watching Good Noticings because of Claire and Ashley's episodes on TFD, watched their interview with MJ Corey because I became a fan of their show, and read & loved MJ's book because of that. And now we're here!

Keeping Up with the Kardashians meant tuning into their show but now with them being the architects of the new beauty standard every day people actually have to KEEP UP with the Kardashians.
