She was going through A LOT at that time. Things were bad to a point she was really close to quit singing forever. Her fans were aware of her situation, and they arranged the whole thing to show her how loved she is. And yeah, “On T’aime” (we love you) sang by thousands of people definitely changed her mind and kept her going.

This performance came at a time in her life when she was . . . debating the value of going forward with it. I'm not referring to the performance, if you know what I mean. She was in a very bad place . . . and then this happened.

Honestly, I can't imagine any antidepressant more powerful than what these thousands upon thousands of people did for her that night. Can you imagine what that memory must be like for her? I've read comments from fans, saying that they still cry every time they see this clip—just imagine how SHE must feel! So much love and warmth and compassion packed into—what? Six, seven minutes?

Damn. How iconic.

She is special. She is the only person that has made me cry during her performances and I have no clue what she is saying.

The most memorable live concert video of all time.

Lara was facing hard times , both on the personal (health, love betrayal and breakup) and professional (her progress blocked in the US by her own record company) sides.

Her fanbase knew most of it and wanted to show support and they used this song, one of her biggest hits in France, replacing the title” Je t’aime / I love you”  by  “On t’aime /  We love you”.

I love how Lara, after the initial surprise, establishes a beautiful dialog with the crowd, giving them room to sing with her.
It shows how benevolent and humble she is.

The song itself is a gem, it was as I said one of her songs that reached the top 10 in France charts. But it even grew bigger after it and has become now a french classic, her most iconic french song. It is still attracting a lot of covers from the young french and canadian vocalists generation (Amir, Jeck,  …). Most frenchmen know the song by heart.

Surprisingly, it was also a massive success  in russia and eastern europe: she became a superstar there thanks to it (and 15 years before her lengthy collaboration with Igor Krutoy that extended this even further) and the song is a MUST in Russian karaoke and a recurrent in russian singer contests.
Again many covers of this songs from eastern europe talents: Polina Gagarina, Sevara Nazarkhan, Katerina Maslova,  Natalia Tsarikova, …

As always with her biggest hits, Lara has performed it in many different ways:
• Intense and powerful at World Music Awards 1999,
• Subtle and delicate in her En Toute Intimité 2003 tour.
• Classy and moving, performing with 2 vertebrae broken, at Royal Albert Hall in London (2011)
• Jazzy in a recent perf (2018) with a band from Quebec

The lyrics are also mesmerizing. Despite the title, it is  not a classic love song but a breakup song instead.
“Je t’aime” was written by Lara  Fabian and Rick Allison, her longtime music producer and composer. He also had been her boyfriend for a few years, at the start of her career. This song was written when their love evolved to a friendship and a professional relationship . It speaks about a couple splitting while still having a lot of sentiments one for the other.

At that time she was in a very emotional period of her life,. This hits home every time I hear it.I have been following her since the early 90's.. awesome singer with an absolutely awesome voice.

The first time I saw this video I cried like a baby. The audience was singing 'We Love You,' and she said, 'I love you.' It's so beautiful.

I cry at this every single time.  What a beautiful moment.

Lara is the Queen.

This is what can happen when we choose to care...they gave her the love and support she needed at a dark time in her life...you can literally hear the strength they gave her as she rises like a Phoenix to walk to the edge of the stage to embrace the moment...music is a gift that if we let it can join us together as one people regardless of our biases...Karl from Canada🍁🍁🍁

America didn't want her man
Still millions loved her in the world and she found her place To this day she still has an active career and she is back to Europe in  The Voice France jury
Amazing person and a life lesson!

The most beautiful and touching dialogue between an artist and her fans. A reciprocal love for sure! ❤️👸🏼❤️

This is how an audience can keep a star from drowning ☺

❤❤❤

So glad you watched this particular event. It was such dark times for her, her private life all over the tabloids. With the collaboration of her pianist, her fans took over the song. They are chanting not the lyrics "I love you" but "we love you" and you can see how it hit home for her. The support helped her. It must be such catharsis, followed by a standing ovation that lasted several minutes. Amazing singer who pours all her emotions into her voice.

❤

This is when the world was beautiful and humans human

It's important to know that during this period, Lara was depressed and had just gone through a very painful breakup with the man for whom she had written this song. They separated because he believed it was beneficial for his artistic career.

Lara is a renowned international singer, very popular in France, and she sings in nine different languages.

Lara ❤💕

Moi petit français suis aux anges de te voir autant apprécier... Cela prouve que la belle musique n'a pas de langue... Pas de frontières... Quand c'est beau... C'est beau
