Thank you for sharing, and I’m sorry that happened. I understand. I’m Albanian, but have lived in the US for 30 years. I visit my homeland almost every year, and each time, I’m reminded of the high regard Albanians have for honesty, integrity, honor and family. I can’t wait to retire to my homeland. I hope you and April have a blessed and fun time around Europe!
Thank you for this video, Patrick. It's a good reminder that others reflect on you and your fellow citizens. It's a terrible thing to intentionally take advantage of others and their trust. I appreciate that Albanians believe your word is your bond and it is disappointing that some people are untrustworthy in that regard. And thank you for sharing your travel adventures. This is something I look forward to when we retire as well.
You are definitely correct to put this out there and to state your position on it. We know how you are inundated by others because you are there and make these videos. It is not your responsibility to assist every stray human that decides to stop in Pogradec with things that they can do for themselves. And should. Keep your boundaries and with it you will keep your reputation, honor and sanity. You and Miss April are wonderful people and have made an obvious impression on the locals. You ARE locals now. Hopefully either Karma or their conscience will catch up to those folks. Shameful.
I catch your videos from time to time. Wife and I are thinking about becoming expats as retirement gets closer. I'm also ex-military (not a lifer) but remember a similar conversation about being an ambassador of the U.S. regardless if in uniform or not....it stuck with me and completely agree with you. If we do become expats and decide eastern Europe is the best fit for us, I'm buying you a beer if our paths cross. Stay strong and healthy!
No, you're right to retell what happened and your position. Stick to recommending lawyers and realtors. You and April have spent so much time trying to make Albania home and building relationships with the people. It's just shameful how some people act. I remember when honesty and honoring your word use to be an American trait, sadly, not so much anymore. There's still lots of good folks, but dwindling year by year, and you just can't tell who's good or bad. Though I think those jerks should be named and shamed, especially if they are youtubers,(don't want to make $ for jerks), but I understand your choice.
We are just about two months out from landing in Vlore. I appreciate what you said about us being immigrants in Albania. We all must be cautious by our actions and mannerisms. We, too, are looking for this to be our long-term home. Thanks for sharing, even if it is just a reminder for all of us to be mindful of our gracious hosts.
That is really sad that happened. Unfortunately there are just a lot of bad eggs out there. This type of story is not uncommon but we live in a world where honor is not a thing anymore for many. People are just selfish and it will impact all around as you say. Honor is a lost word in this world.
One month today I will land in Albania. It's disappointing to say the least to hear about the deplorable actions of others from our country and I'm glad you put this out there. Once trust is lost it's almost impossible to win it back. Stay well.
Thank you for the video, sir. So frustrating! I’m embarrassed as well and I’ve not even set foot in Albania…yet. My plans include seeing a lot of the world when I retire; collect experiences rather than things. That said, literally just yesterday, I asked myself, other than just sticking a pin in a new country and collecting photos, “What’s my purpose?”. I landed on being an unofficial ambassador, so to speak. Not to run around and say, “I’m here to represent the US.”, but to be a good human being to other humans of different cultures; be interested in the other individual, make a friend, offer help, volunteer where I can. Live for a purpose, not just a photo. I don’t have grandiose plans, just want to quietly be an example of integrity and honor. Anywho, if someone were to start a Go-Fund-Me of some sort for the person who got ripped off, I’d gladly donate.
I don’t blame you for feeling ashamed about these jerks. You have been great in giving me helpful advice. Albania is still on my radar. One of these days, hopefully before they’re part of Schengen
