You forgot the network for the last three years has had to close in the summer because of low water resources. You can't cruise in the summer because of low water, you can't cruise in the winter because of winter stoppages for maintenance. Life on the water is getting increasingly difficult, that's why a lot of boaters are stepping away from the canals.
Actual canal life is not for the faint hearted, going through a winter is the true test, that's when you see a lot give up after buying a boat, winters can be harsh.

Been musing about something like this for some time .
Living overseas would make it easy .
Fitting out is work I can do . Yet prices are higher over there !!
Biggest issue , mooring at any marina where I can work on it :-)

I bought mine in 2002. I had it surveyed last year and it was valued at £50 less than what I paid for it.

2:25 Springer was never a "respected yard". They're made of very thin steel. One of the first questions that every boat insurance company asks on the applications is, "Is your boat a Springer?" I'm sure there are wonderful success stories out there but most have more tears than smiles. Buyer beware.

I reviewed the idea of buying a narrow boat, but the sanitary facilities alone deterred me.
They are very little removed from pooping in a bucket!

I have talked on phone to the trust they are raving mad I have a long 18 foot Canadian canoe
a license from the trust costs more than than join the canoe club you get a free trust license
who owns the canal? every thing is owned by the trust even water banks and fish???
so when I fish a canal do some guy comes and asks for monies to fish
i ASKED what can use tow path they said walkers cyclists
I asked horses O NO WHAT the tow path was made for horses the canal trust is raving
