Thanks for watching, this is an updated and edited version of a video I posted yesterday. I had to clarify and correct a few things. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

From the UK, a veteran from 16yo,now 60s. The 58 pattern w/bot was designed to be used wearing an S10 respirator . The plastic mug ,so we didn't burn our lips, drinking copious amounts of tea.  British set for me.

Excellent comparison my friend.

If your biggest criticism of the British canteen is that you don't like the plastic cup, because it doesn't let you access the canteen as immediately as the GI canteen, you could just take your own advice and leave it at home. It's a component that the GI canteen doesn't even have, so it's not like removing it from the British kit would somehow disadvantage it. Just seems like an incredibly odd bug to have. Chuck it on the fire if it's annoying you, you'll have a kit that does exactly the same as the US GI (with more capacity).

Only issue then is the stove, though the MK2 fixed that too. They sort of just do the exact same thing these days.

When you get down to it, the US system has hardly changed it all since 1910.
The only real differences are the material of the canteen now, and the upgraded way to carry it.
Plus the cool civilian made products made for it.
I think I’ll stick with my MURICAN  way of carrying a canteen and cup, although it was cool seeing the comparisons with the Limey way of doing things.
Thanks Jon, very COOL vid.
HYPED!!

I got my Crusader kit separately, a MK1 cup/pot & a MK2 cooker which is deeper and better suited to the Trangia.

British Kit for myself and I never looked back at my USGI  set.

Crusader set for me. Same as others, Mk1 mixed with a Mk2 cooker base, as it is deeper. I have a set so does my Mrs for when she goes out and about on her own and wants a brew on the hills.

In all my years deployed with UK armed forces, I only had 1 cup which was metal, and sat under the water bottle so was easily available.
My hexamine stove had a lid that was shaped to take the cup so you could heat water if needed but we mostly used our mess tins.
What you showed looked very messy and too much effort.
We could also fit our gas mask drinking tube with this water bottle which you did not show.

I always love the content and honest approach to your content. Pathfinder offers a kit with 2 cups, 2 stoves, 1 canteen and a bag. Much like the British version, but stainless. I am sure it is heavier...but worth it.

Great video brother. I like the British one the best, but I've always wanted the British mk2 though I think that'd be even better.

Great video.  Very informative.  I agree with you that it always comes down to personal preference.  Sometimes I still use a USGI canteen, but these days it’s mainly a civilian style water steel bottle.  I like the Pathfinder kit a lot.

crusader all the way, i have one and love it

If you were carrying a second canteen of the British version you would only have one cup of the crusader canteens. Not two!!  Being a USMC veteran I would carry the Crusader MK2 where people have made it a twig stove and used a self made alcohol stove to fit or modified it to handle a Trangia stove. In my opinion you should have bought the MK2 and did a comparison with that one. But your analysis of all three proved its points. If I can carry more water than I would do so, you never know when or where that extra is needed. I have both canteens of the Crusader models and stoves. And yess they were originally designed to function on BCB or Esbit solid fuels. But the MK2 can be modified to work with trangia or twigs. Canteens are the same but canteen cups are made differently.

SEMPER FI

I use the grayl bottle with a metal cup and lid in a round pouch

Thanks for posting this video comparison. I actually have all three kits; the BCB Crusader set being the MK2 version that accommodates solid fuels, stick fires and Trangia burners. And had it not been for the taller stove on that set, like you I would pick the USGI canteen cup set as #1. Yes, the Crusader set can be rather fiddly when simply wanting a drink of water on the fly. But overall (for me) I think it out performs the other two in versatility. And it’s just fun to use. There’s a guy in the UK who sells quality handmade lids for the Crusader mugs on Etsy. I think I paid $28 for mine including shipping to the US. Definitely worth a look.

You can buy a water bottle based on the 58 pattern with a cap water purifier. SURVIVOR 58.

From another ex Brit squaddie. Bin the plastic mug.... We just used the metal one.

Great comparisons, Brother !!!

I have carried the USGI version since before joining the military, and have at least 6 sets currently. (I have 8 of the green canteens, and 4 of the "Nalgene" see-through canteens that I interchange with the green ones.)

I am looking to purchase a BCB MK-2 version of the British one...in multicam, I hope....this year (but, might wait until next year).
I like it so as to have 2 "cups", to use one for cooking and heating water, and the plastic one for coffee (or tea).
I will probably store it on or in my pack/ruck.
Where as I am used to carrying 2 x 1 Qt canteens (USGI systems) on my "battle rattle" (on person), in case we need to drop the pack in a rush.
I have been using a SilverAnt liquid fuel stove (spirits stove) that is titanium (or one of the many Evernew/Boundless Voyage-style of titanium stoves), under the USGI "stove" addition, instead of the Trangia stove, when I carry the USGI kit.
It's a bit lighter.

I will be carrying canteens no matter what and which, and have been carrying a different cook kit, with an old-style Stanley Adventure cook kit pot, nested into a 750 or 900 ml (not sure which right now) titanium cup/pot (complete with bail handle, and a lid), a SilverAnt titanium liquid fuel stove w/windshield and cross stand (it is their stove kit) stowed inside, with a couple of 5-hour energy shot bottles, or a small travel size Listerine mouthwas bottle, filled with fuel (along with a few other additions - small scrubby pad, a microfiber towel, a lighter or 2, etc).
I should do a video on it, just to give people another option.
We'll see....

Keep up the great work !!!

The british mk1 burner stand works quite well with liquid fuel also, just pour some in and use it like the usual gel fuel.. One just has to be careful not to spill it while its alight.. Another option could be to leave out the plastic osprey cup and sit your stainless tomshoo stove upside down on the top of the canteen in its place... My original canteen cookset that I put together uses a british army osprey mk4 canteen pouch, usgi canteen with stainless cup and aluminium stove as per usual and a british osprey plastic canteen cup sitting upside down on the top, it also has one of the pathfinder lids, a spoon and a small wooden spatula that I cut out of a larger spatula that fit down the sides... I usually carry it all inside my pack and use my 2 other external canteens for drinking etc
