Which moment of censorship in the original anime sticks out to you the most? Did I miss any major moments that you remember? Let me know your thoughts below - thanks everyone!

My least favourite censorship moment is probably Orihime's backstory omitting the fact that her brother ran away with her when she was an infant due to having abusive parents, and how Orihime found her brother bleeding out on the road, while on the way to school, and had to carry him herself to the Kurosaki's clinic.

For me the Rangiku and Hiyori censorship is the most egregious because the anime still plays up their censored injuries as if they are just as severe as their uncensored injuries when they are clearly not

Can’t forget that in the manga, when Grimmjow rips Loly’s entire leg off as he’s “saving” Orihime, the anime decided to replace it by… having Grimmjow shout “boo!” at her like she’s a 5 year old. It’s an absolutely insane example, lmao

The censorship ruined Gin‘s ruthlessness and Orihime‘s power growth

Going from the anime to the manga really showed me how much the anime censored some of the best moments in Bleach.

A censorship that comes to mind was Grimmjow being hit with Ichigo's Getsuga Tensho which results in his famous chest scar. In the anime, it is mainly bruises I never understood how Grimmjow didn't just heal from that but in the manga we see that it landed a deep cut on his chest and wrists and it's understandable

"I do not have the time, nor the patience, to teach a child like you how to breath!" Old man Yama to Nanao as she is foaming at the mouth due to his spiritual pressure crushing her until Shunsui shield her. She's just wide eyes heavy breathing in the anime.

the reason Ayon was looking at his hand in the anime is because he was wondering how the blood got there.

@thekrypticarchive1282 1 year ago

It’s kinda funny how Soi Fons arm getting decayed is likely the most gruesome thing shown in the old anime. But even then it’s kinda tame compared to moments from the manga or even the TYBW anime lol

I love the way Kubo draws blood in the manga. Like he's one of the only shonen mangaka who actually draws a realistic amount of blood from horrible injuries

Kukaku Shiba's prosthetic arm threw me for a loop when I first saw it. That was the moment that taught me to expect heavy censorship from what was in the manga vs. the anime.

@kyl0ooart 1 year ago

To be fair if i had to animate that nemu scene id have to get some therapy

@Dygalann 1 year ago

The amount of censorship in the og anime makes me glad that the TYBW arc doesn't pull its punches, and really leaves you lingering with so much gore and brutality unlike anything seen in any other arc before it, Kubo really made sure to do all those bloody scenes justice in the new anime, and it clearly shows more respect for the series itself rather than just implying substantial injuries that are potentially life-threatening, torsos slashed, heads decapitated and on full display, innards exposed, headshots, there's just so much to unpack unlike before

When I finally read the Bleach manga as a young adult, it was like a Renaissance. My perspective was changed so much that I can no longer hold the OG series in high regard due to the sheer amount of misconceptions and needless changes it produced.

@an2wei 1 year ago

I've always hated how they randomly nerf Stark's wolves. Like Stark already doesn't do that much and they still decide to give arbitrary restrictions and limitations to the most powerful ability of the most powerful espada for literally no reason.

@demiandemonus 1 year ago

The anime did many changes, one of the things that surprised me the most when i started the manga, was how likeable was Orihime and how some of the changes affected her relation to Ichigo from the beginning

@iReiGNxx 1 year ago (edited)

The most amusing instance of censorship is the show making a big deal of Orihime using her reality-bending powers to…sew Tsukishima’s sleeve back up. 😂 Though it does unfortunately undercut the moment.

@catlike9444 1 year ago

If bleach ever (most likely not) get a remake i hope it's less censored.

There is also the fight between Kenpachi and Nnoitra. When Kenpachi cuts off his arm in the anime, the arm bounces away like a ball. In the manga, Kenpachi has his arm on the tip of his zanpakuto, likely as an intimidating move.
