As a Finn I always get a cultural shock when visiting saunas outside of Finland. We once had a work trip to Germany and we went to the hotels Sauna. Soon I realized that it was impossible to get more heat to the sauna so it was only 50 degrees. We noticed a red button on the wall and thought that maybe thats going to add more "löyly" but instead it was the alarm.  So couple minutes later the staff arrived and asked if everyone is ok?

"We're fine just finns trying to get more heat to this cold sauna"
The Germans didn't really have sense of humour and replied "please don't press it again!".

As an old Finnish sauna-lover I would say that this was a very good hand book for foreigners .

I'm a Finnish American that resides in the U.P. of Michigan. I do Sauna about once a week and for me the BEST thing to do is after a sauna is sit outside and let the breeze evaporate the water on you and cool me down slowly.

I have a friend that is nuts about sauna. If you have a sauna that he's never been in, he's gonna have a sauna. He's had a sauna in over 150 different peoples saunas.

I became totally addicted to the Finnish Sauna in Cologne Germany whilst working out there. It was a baptism of fire... speaking as an English man. The first time I stepped in there without realising I had to remove my sweaty swim wear and go natural. But after a couple of sessions I realised that as an outsider and being the only one that was trying to cover up... I was the one that actually stood out and everyone was looking at quizzically. After that I embraced it and became totally immersed in it. I spent virtually every Sunday down there, Sauna, Shower, Ice bath, swim in mineral water pool and the back to the sauna. Several times for 2 to 3 hours. I have never felt cleaner or more relaxed in my life. It's a beautiful experience that I would highly recommend to anyone.

In romanian we also pronounce sauna in the same way as finns do.

We have friends in Helsinki whom we visit each year. We ALWAYS have a sauna when we go, then cool down in the shower. (I'm 80 - you are never too old)

And the Sauna theme is the same in Estonia, just for everyone's information. If you plan to travel here, I recommend going to the sauna with Estonians, just like you go naked.

I haven't been there since 1991 on an Eurail trip with my Dad. This video is another reason to go back.

American here. Build a wood fired sauna about 10 years ago out back. Use it about 3 times a week. One thing I seem do different is shower before every cool -off in a tepid shower. Not sure of heart risks of cold plunges. I love the sauna and have used it steadily all these years. There is always time in the evening for 2 to 3 hours of sauna!

My favorite practice is to use snow and Ice from outside to make the steam.

In the summer, number 5 changes to a sauna whisk or vasta (eastern dialects) or vihta (western dialects) in Finnish.

The sauna is really sacred to us Finns, because we Finns go to the sauna on average once a week and to church once a year.

I did my first Finnish sauna at Loyly Helsinki, with a jump into the Baltic that had just started to melt (2 degrees C)!  It was excellent….followed it up with a fabulous dinner where I had reindeer for the first time.  It too was excellent!  Going back in April for another go!

If I lived anywhere near Finland I'd definitely participate. I bet that feels amazingly invigorating.

I Lived in Kemi for several months 20 years ago.   I loved how peaceful that town is.  I only lived in Finland for a couple years but I still consider Finland my second home a it has a huge piece of my heart.

My last proper sauna was in michigans UP,  wood fired third generation finns still spoke finnish in the house.    Had to draw straws to see who had to go outside and get the beer.   It was a roll in the snow after but snow was a but crusty.

I love the sauna ritual, thé heat, thé cold , thé heat again, etc. It's the best there is.

Saying ‘sauna’ - which is exactly what we do - and simply shutting up and enjoying the peace and quiet. Being naked simply means that everyone is the same. Differences are left outside. And then the hot / cold change, wonderful!

Our sauna at the house isn't near a water source. When I roll in the snow I end up with a head cold. My preference is to sit on the bench outside and watch the sweat freeze on my body. I like to do that several times before washing up.
