Hey everyone! So I have an important question for you.... R triggers cheating? I don't think they are, lets get that straight right away buuuuuutttt I definitely like when a drummer smashes the bass drums like an Eloy Casagrande or Matt Garska. Double A Austin Archey is a world class drummer and very much so the future of this style but I need to know are these types of speeds possible without triggers and is it possible to play full strokes at those tempos. Very interested to hear your feed back.

Annnddd that break down had me tripping for sure, insane feel from Double A here and throughout!

The "are triggers cheating?" argument falls completely flat the moment you think about electric guitars. What you hear being played on an electric guitar is not the guitar itself but the effects that the pedals or pickups create. Triggers are literally the equivalent of an effect pedal. If anything, they make drumming even more difficult because any inconsistencies will be heard. Considering that Meinl doesn't quantize their audio tracks, Austin has some of the cleanest footwork in the world.

Funny thing about him, he played a tour with a Herniated Disk so just imaging a full show of this endurance WITH A HERNIATED DISK just making it worse. Also, another fun fact, there was a time where he couldnt play a tour and the BASSIST of the band (which he learned bass just to play on Lorna Shore, because he was primarly a drummer) filled the shows without a sweat. TRULY UNREAL.

He's playing heel toe technique.

That's two beats per stroke

Austin is fast AF boiiiiii and he’s so relaxed while doing it.

The craziest thing for me is that Austin recieved very little formal drum practice, he played drums when he was younger, and his brother played guitar (he has his own band) Austin joined Lorna Shore straight out of High School and has been there ever since. He just picked things up from a bunch of different drummers that he toured with and knew from the local band scene.

Heel and toe technique. And no triggers aren’t cheating. The speed these drummers play at, no microphone could handle the onslaught, so all the triggers do is highlight the sound that’s being performed.

A point about it not looking like the beater is hitting the head, I think that's mostly due to the framerate of the video/camera. Those double strokes are happening 17.33 notes per second and the video is in 30 frames per second. Lots of those hits are happening in between frames.

Pushing the video to 60 fps would help a lot, but not fully solve this problem.

Also, if you want a suggestion for another drummer to check out, check Inferno - Behemoth - At The Left Hand Ov God. Guy has it all. (Inferno is the drummer, Behemoth is the band, At The Left Hand Ov God is the song, it should be the first thing that pops up if you search "Inferno behemoth".)

yes, triggers, yes doubles.

It's just his setup, the beaters are close to the head, but he's still playing very very clean doubles. Pretty sure they're axis longboards of some sort.

He's so good he looks bored when he's playing...

Who doesn't love honesty and sincerity..good luck with the channel..if you keep being real you'll do great I'm sure

Austin switches from heel toe and slide technique both on slower and faster parts that's why it's hard for others especially non-drummers to keep up with what he's doing.

Austin is the epitome of masterclass. Amazing musicianship! Absolute wizard on a drum throne!

You should really check out Evgeny Novikov from Slaughter to Prevail, dude hits like a damn sniper. Great reaction to one of my top 10 favorite drummers.

Im not sure if he's using triggers for the kick, but I have definitely heard faster kicks before triggers were really a thing (may have existed but long before metal bands had ever started using them).  There's an old video of the drummer from Nile doing an exercise of some kind stepping up from 200 to 300 bpm or something like that.  That's definitely some exceptional talent in the video I refer to but it CAN be done without triggers.  For the record triggers don't bother me, just cool to know that there's people out there who can go faster than this without them.

That's also not to say one is a better drummer than another, I don't know enough about drums to have an opinion on who's better

No matter how you decide to slice it Austin is an absolute beast! He is so amazing triggers or not it don't matter. He's amazing!

Should check out the drummer from The Black Dahlia Murder. Death metal band, funny story... the drummer a lot of the time plays in an office chair and completely shreds at drums while leaning back.

Everyone has to point out triggers like it's some magical invention that allows you play real fast double bass without actually playing. Triggers EXPOSE mistakes and sloppiness. They don't hide them. It would sound like a continuous muddy rumble playing this fast without triggers.

Now you need check Evgeny from Slaughter to prevail

If he liked this one he should check out the one for welcome back ol' sleeping dreamer
