Garry Shandling | The Larry Sanders Show, Stand-Up Comedy, Underrated Legacy
Blind Mike Project
2,216 views
Garry Shandling approached comedy as something to be examined, questioned, and rebuilt from the inside out — both on stage and on television.
In this episode of Why Are You Laughing?, we explore Garry Shandling’s career through two parallel breakthroughs: his introspective stand-up comedy and his groundbreaking work in television. The discussion looks at how Shandling’s stand-up challenged traditional joke structure by turning insecurity, self-awareness, and the act of performing itself into the subject of comedy.
The episode also examines Shandling’s innovations in television, from It's Garry Shandling's Show to The Larry Sanders Show, and how those projects fundamentally changed what sitcoms could be. By breaking the fourth wall, exposing ego and insecurity, and satirizing the machinery behind entertainment, Shandling created a template that influenced generations of comedians and writers who followed.
Rather than separating his stand-up from his TV work, this episode looks at how both were driven by the same instinct — a need to deconstruct comedy itself — and why Garry Shandling remains one of the most important and influential figures in modern comedy history.
